Macau to Open New Beijing Palace Museum Centre in Predicted 2 to 3 Years

The Beijing-based Palace Museum is expected to complete a new centre in Macau within the next 2 to 3 years, as reported by the mainland Chinese newspaper China Daily.

The Macau centre will serve two purposes, to both safeguard Macau's cultural heritage and design cultural products related to the Palace Museum.

The Hong Kong Palace Museum, which opened in 2018, has welcomed over 900,000 visitors. It displays 900 priceless treasures borrowed from the Palace Museum in Beijing, including cultural artifacts related to imperial families once living in the Forbidden City.

Dong Dan, deputy director of the International Exchange Department of the Palace Museum, said the Macau centre would differ from its Hong Kong counterpart and aims to promote Chinese culture through products displayed and sold at the venue.

Macau has become a base where the Palace Museum holds exhibitions that it hopes would attract tourists from all over the world. The Palace Museum aims to offer visitors to Hong Kong an opportunity to visit exhibits at the Hong Kong Palace Museum and enjoy related cultural offerings at the Macau centre, given that the two special administrative regions are in close proximity.

The Palace Museum has held 31 exhibitions in Macau since 1999, when Macau returned to China. Its most recent exhibition, Auspicious Beginning: Spring Festival Traditions in the Forbidden City, showcased the imperial traditions of the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911).
