MMDA Brings Back Number Coding Scheme During Rush Hour

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has kicked off the re-implementation of the number coding scheme for private vehicles starting today, Dec. 1.

The Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program is effective during rush hour from 5 PM to 8 PM on Mondays through Fridays, excluding public holidays. The scheme excludes public utility vehicles (including tricycles), transport network vehicle services, motorcycles, garbage trucks, fuel trucks, and motor vehicles carrying essential or perishable goods, the MMDA said in a press release.

“Data shows that the travel speed along the northbound portion of EDSA is 9.66 kilometers per hour. Hence, we have to reinstate the number coding scheme during the afternoon rush hours to address the problem. We are trying to exhaust all options here,” MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said.

“The solution to this problem is efficient traffic management and mass transport system.”

Meanwhile, the MMDA re-imposed its ban on light trucks plying EDSA between Magallanes, Makati City, and North Avenue, Quezon City, both northbound and southbound, from 5 AM to 9 PM from Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.
