Lets Hike Five Best Peaks to Conquer in Hong Kong

Hong Kong may be an urban jungle bustling with cramped neighbourhoods and tall skyscrapers, but the former British colony is never short of scenic natural wonders that can compete to some of the world’s best. If you are up for a fun yet challenging weekend, exploring the city’s hiking trails should be added to your list. The climbs may be tough, but we guarantee that the magnificent view at the end of your trail is worth every sweat. Here are the best peaks to conquer in Hong Kong for your next weekend getaway.

Tai Mo Shan

Dubbed as the highest peak in Hong Kong, Tai Mo Shan is for adrenaline junkies on the hunt for an exciting climb. It is located on the MacLehose Trail Section 8 and has an elevation of 957 metres. However, you can only go as far as 895 metres as the actual peak is barred from public access. Once a volcano, Tai Mo Shan also offers below-temperature weather during winter.

Sunset Peak

As its name implies, Sunset Peak is one of the city’s best spots to catch the fading daylight while enjoying the cool breeze atop a mountain. It also yields stunning views of bays and beaches, particularly Cheung Sha, the longest beach in Hong Kong. Standing 869 metres above sea level, Sunset Peak gets windy and cool during winter and foggy in spring.

Kowloon Peak

Many experienced climbers in Hong Kong recommend Kowloon Peak to those looking for challenging trails. This peak is nowhere in the 10 highest in the city, but it remains a favourite, thanks to its narrow and steep routes that make for an extra demanding but fulfilling climb. Kowloon Peak is linked to the infamous Suicide Cliff, which had its fair share of fatal accidents. If you follow safety precautions, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the cityscape after a treacherous ascent. While the cliff offers a nice sunset view, we recommend hiking during the day if you are a first timer.

Lantau Peak

Featuring steep slopes, Lantau Peak is one of the most challenging trails in Hong Kong. It is the second-highest summit standing at 934 metres above sea level and is a nice vantage point for basking in the scenic vistas of Lantau beaches. The easiest hiking trail is sandwiched between Pak Kung Au and Ngong Ping on Lantau Trail Section 3. But if you are up for a challenge, you can go straight to the Dog Teeth Range.

Ma On Shan

Standing 702 metres above sea level, the 10th highest summit in Hong Kong opens to the magnificent vistas of the Sai Kung Peninsula at the peak. It is nicknamed “Horse Saddle Mountain” because of its shape. You will be treated to lush sceneries on your way up, a preview to the gorgeous views (and restaurants!) awaiting you at the peak.
