Spotify Lounge Celebrates a Decade of Pinoy Music Culture

Spotify LoungePhoto by Spotify Philippines

Music is more than just music. It goes beyond chords and sound, lyrics, and metaphors. Music has connected people despite language barriers and has expressed emotions we often have difficulty putting into words. Today, media and the Internet have given us unlimited paths into the world of music. Gone are the days of winding up cassette tapes or buying CDs and records at the store.

Now music can be easily accessed with a few taps on our phones, specifically on music streaming platforms such as Spotify, a global powerhouse in audio streaming and a game changer for artists and music fans alike. It played a huge role in the rise of Asian music, such as K-Pop and OPM (Original Philippine Music) which continues to influence music trends globally. In the Philippines, Spotify has redefined how Filipinos experience and engage with music, with Pinoy music streams quadrupling over the past five years.

Last Oct. 8, Spotify held the first-ever Spotify Lounge: Philippine Edition at the Samsung Hall in SM Aura Premiere to celebrate a decade of Pinoy music’s growth through surprise performances, the unveiling of special collaborations and playlists, and the awarding of Spotify’s first-ever decade-defining artists.

The Beat Manila got to sit up front and center for this exciting music milestone, and we’re here to tell you all about it.

A Decade-Defining Run

Spotify PH holds its first-ever Spotify Lounge, an intimate gathering of artists, fans, and important players in the industry where they pay tribute to the songs that shaped our music culture, as well as the talented trailblazers set on shaping the future of Filipino music.

Insanely good vibes can be felt across the venue and that thrilling anticipation from having so many talented musicians in the same room — the same people whose voices and songs have taken over our playlists from day to night.

Speaking of playlists, one of the most notable things about Spotify is that it provides music “Made For You,” having mastered the art of creating playlists for your every mood and every vibe. The platform curates unique “daylists” for who you are in every moment of every day from your ‘funky Pilates Wednesday mornings’ to your ‘hopeless romantic cozy Sunday nights.’ Simply put, no one knows your music tastes better than Spotify.

To mark ten years of Pinoy music growth on the platform, Spotify has unveiled its refreshed Pinoy Music Hub, a space with over fifty editorial playlists that drive culture and champion artist discovery. This is Spotify PH’s commitment to both artists and listeners, providing them the ultimate destination for Filipino music across all genres. You can find some of the best Pinoy music hits in playlists such as Tatak Pinoy, KALYE, and P-Pop on the Rise. You can also find fantastic collections of timeless favorites in OPM Hits of the ‘80s, ‘90s, and ‘00s, as well as soundtracks for every mood that give “main character” vibes from Kilig Pa Moreto Hugot, Panalo, and more!

With a growing creator economy and fan-driven music culture, Spotify’s features fueled fan support from personalized recommendations to social media sharing features. Spotify Philippines' Top 50 chart now comprises 75% local tracks and several local genres have seen massive growth in global daily streams including Pinoy Hip-Hop which had a 600% increase over the past five years and P-Pop, which experienced a 138% year-on-year increase in streams in the past year alone.

“Pinoy music continues to reach new fans across genres and borders. Spotify not only delivers an unparalleled, personalized music experience for listeners, but also serves as the platform for artists to grow their audience and build deep connections with their fans,” Kossy Ng, Head of Music for Spotify Southeast Asia, said at the event as she walked us through Spotify’s journey in the country and how it all started with a humble goal to “change the way people connected with music.”

Kossy also shared that Pinoy global music streams have hit 71 billion in the past decade and have accelerated — quadrupled, even, in the last five years! Thanks to the avid listeners, local music culture has never been more alive, and we have seen so many established and emerging voices break through on Spotify not only locally, but on a global scale.

“With an impressive 80% average growth in Pinoy artist global exports year-on-year, we remain dedicated to empowering Filipino talents and continue elevating Pinoy music on the global stage. I’m excited to bring their music to even more fans around the world,” added Kossy.

This achievement was further celebrated in a special collaboration issue with Billboard Philippines, which featured some of the most listened-to and rising talents on the streaming platform such as Ben&Ben and Moira Dela Torre. The issue consists of articles exploring Spotify’s journey; the artists that have defined the music of the last decade; the evident power of Spotify’s playlist ecosystem, and how the streaming platform plans to shape the future of music culture here and abroad.

“Whether it’s through news articles or curated playlists, live music activations, music award shows or artist-focused development programs, providing platforms and creating opportunities to empower artists is at the core of everything that we do,” said Bret Jackson, Editor-in-Chief of Billboard Philippines. “Simply put, when we see Filipino music’s value, we give Filipino music value.”

EmpoweRING Pinoy Artists’ Music Milestones

Music wouldn’t exist without its creators, the artists who have taken the courage to put themselves out there and express their deepest thoughts and emotions for the world to hear — all in the hope of connecting people and providing them solace, comfort, and entertainment.

A music event wouldn’t be complete without live performances and the first to take the stage was Ben&Ben, who sang their 2017 hit, “Kathang Isip.” They also gave a teaser performance of “Triumph,” a song included in their upcoming third album, “The Traveller Across Dimensions.”

The nine-piece band was just one of the recipients of the Spotify Milestone Ring, an award given to artists for their record-breaking hits that have touched the hearts of listeners and resonated with fans over the last ten years. These so-called “decade-definers” have shaped Pinoy music with over 200 million streams. This milestone reflects the artists’ dedication, passion, and artistic evolution, which definitely deserves to be celebrated.

“This piece of jewelry really encapsulates a deeply personal symbol of success. For artists, it’s a constant reminder of how far they’ve come in their craft, as well as their journey that they should be so incredibly proud of,” said Sarah Sim, Head of Artist & Label Partnerships for Spotify Southeast Asia.

“And for us at Spotify, it is our pledge. It is a commitment from us to the Filipino artists that we’re committed to really grow you guys on the Philippine stage and push you to greater heights and global stages as well.”

Along with Ben&Ben, who were honored for their tracks “Kathang Isip” and “Maybe the Night,” the Filipino artists honored at the Spotify Lounge were the first to receive the Spotify Milestone rings in the world. A massive honor, if we say so ourselves, and a true testament to how Philippine music has grown and transcended borders.

Other decade-defining tracks included, Tadhana (Up Dharma Down), Pano (Zack Tabudlo), Ikaw Lang(NOBITA), Paraluman (Adie), Mahika (Adie and Janine Berdin), Mundo and “Come Inside Of My Heart” (IV Of Spades), Pasilyo (SunKissed Lola), Kung 'Di Rin Lang Ikaw (December Avenue and Moira Dela Torre), Pagsamo and Isa Lang(Arthur Nery), and Kung Wala Ka(Hale).

Apart from established music icons, rising talents also showed us what they’re made of and gave fantastic performances including Illest Morena who recently released her debut album “Morenita”; Hev Abi, and Makiwho are part of Spotify’s RADAR playlist, known for their innovative sounds and styles shaping the next wave of Pinoy music.

Whatever sound you’re in the mood for or genre you groove to, you can always count on Spotify for the best song recommendations to complete the soundtrack of your life. More than that, we can’t wait for what the streaming platform has in store for the next decade in terms of discovering new voices and giving Filipino artists more opportunities to share their music with the rest of the world.

Two Decades Proud: Yabang Pinoy’s Legacy Sparks a Filipino Renaissance

It started with a simple idea: that national pride isn’t just a slogan but also a lifestyle. Now, 20 years later, Yabang Pinoy is proving that living proudly Filipino is a movement and a revolution.

Founded in 2005 by a group of passionate young advocates, Yabang Pinoy has spent the last two decades championing Filipino identity through entrepreneurship, creativity, and community. From its iconic Global Pinoy Bazaar to youth leadership camps and cinema sessions, the organization has built platforms that celebrate Filipino excellence in every form.

This year, the movement marks its milestone anniversary with a dynamic lineup of events and collaborations. The “Filipino Brands in Focus” panel spotlights trailblazers like Ann Poco of Gouache and Ali Sangalang of Linya-Linya, two creatives who turned passion into purpose. Gouache’s artisan-crafted bags and Linya-Linya’s witty, culturally-rooted apparel are statements of pride.

In a powerful gesture of sustainability, Gouache and Yabang Pinoy are launching a special bag collection, with proceeds supporting the planting of 100,000 Bitaog trees along La Union’s Bacnotan Riverway. These native hardwoods protect against flooding and erosion, proving that Filipino pride can also be planet-friendly.

Meanwhile, Ali Sangalang’s journey from presidential speechwriter to creative entrepreneur continues to inspire. His brand Linya-Linya joins the celebration with its “Live Proud” shorts, the wearable reminders that pride in one’s roots can be both stylish and subversive.

The final quarter of 2025 is packed with events, including the 27th to 29th Global Pinoy Bazaars in Makati and Mandaluyong, and the 6th PH Cinema Sessions in Quezon City. Each gathering is a chance to shop local, support artists, and rediscover the richness of Filipino culture.

Join the movement, support homegrown talent, and make every purchase a celebration of Filipino identity. Visit Yabang Pinoy’s Instagram and Facebook to learn about their events this season, and be part of the pride, while you. Meanwhile, check out Gouache’s Instagram and Linya-Linya’s Instagram.

Manila Fashion Week Unveils Designer Lineup for 2025 Show

DesignersPhoto by The Beat Asia

Manila is set to receive a fashion upgrade as it prepares for the inaugural Manila Fashion Week (MNLFW), scheduled to take place this October.

Formerly known as BYS Fashion Week, this annual event began in 2022 as an anniversary party for the brand. Its success led to its sequels in 2023 and 2024, and this year, the team is broadening its scope to redefine what Philippine fashion truly means locally and internationally.

Last Sept. 25, The Beat Asia got to sit down at the media launch for the event, where founder John Lozano expressed his excitement for the upcoming shows and unveiled this official lineup of designers.

“What we always kept in mind while we were doing BYS Fashion Week was to push for excellence. We always wanted the shows to be as spectacular as possible because the Filipino designers deserve better. They deserve a platform where they can share their story and vision. It’s really to honor and celebrate the Filipino designers.”

This year’s MNLFW will happen on Oct. 16 to 19, 2025 at the SM Aura Premiere, with eight shows featuring an exciting lineup of designers who embody the event's purpose: to showcase the Philippines as a global destination. John’s team personally curated the lineup, consisting of a mix of returning and debuting designers on the MNLFW stage, which includes Andrea Tetangco, Viktor, Viña Romero, OXGN, Chris Nick, Iñigo, DBTK, and Randolf.

“We look for designers and brands that have a distinct point of view,” explained John when asked about the deliberation process. “Brands and designers that the moment you see a piece, you already know it’s theirs. That’s always something that I look out for. At the same time, we look for designers and brands that really have the potential to go global because, at the end of the day, we want to get designers who have that mindset of creating brands that can compete globally. Brands that think beyond just designing clothes — those who create bags, shoes, and the world around them.”

John also revealed some highlights of the event beyond the main show. For the past three years, MNLFW has taken place in various venues to allow designers to choose a location where they believe they can convey their message in the best way. This year, they’re partnering with SM Aura Premiere for two venues: the Samsung Hall and the MNLFW Tent, which will be set up at the mall’s Sky Park. This change was mainly for the guests’ convenience, considering the fluctuating weather conditions in the city.

“Rest assured that each show will still have its own design and flavor. We’re going to change the set every show,” John shared. “In between the shows, there will be a lot of things people can do. There will be lounges where food is served, photo spots, and pop-ups. It’s a full experience for the guests.”

Another exciting highlight is the first-ever MNLFW Pop-Up, which will put up the designers’ clothes for sale after every show. This completes the fashion week experience, allowing guests to not only see the clothes, but also feel them up close and buy pieces they like.

Fashion weeks all over the world have always centered on commerce. It’s really for designers to sell their clothes and show them to their clients. It’s supposed to help the designers get their business out there, and at the same time, the audience doesn’t just need to see the clothes, but they need to wear them and bring them home. That’s the essence of it all.”

Although Fashion Weeks are known to be an invite-only event, John shared that they’re opening a limited number of exclusive slots to the public for fans to witness their favorite designers and brands. You can send your applications here, which will then be screened and reviewed for approval by the MNLFW team.

Photographer ModeHunter will also be at the event to take photos for PAUSE Online, a publication that features streetwear fashion. This underscores the team’s desire to put Manila on the map as one of the global fashion capitals in the world.

“I hope this will start a revolution. We just need one foot in the door, and it’s going to start something,” John said. “I always push for embracing who we truly are, and who we truly are is a mixture of so many things. We are a global country. Instead of just looking at the past and finding the thing that’s so unique about the Philippines, let’s just embrace who we are today. That’s what we’re trying to push for Fashion Week.”

It’s not every day that a Broadway phenomenon lands in your neighborhood cinema. But starting Oct. 1, 2025, Filipino fans will finally get their shot to experience Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genre-defying musical, on the big screen for a strictly limited one-week run until Oct. 7, 2025. And it’s not just the filmed version you may have streamed on Disney+. This release packs an exclusive prologue titled “Reuniting the Revolution,” featuring fresh interviews with the original cast and creators.

Timed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show’s Broadway debut, this cinematic event is more than nostalgia. Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016, the production stars Miranda himself as Alexander Hamilton, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Phillipa Soo, and Jonathan Groff.

Directed by Thomas Kail and produced by RadicalMedia, the film captures the raw energy and emotional depth that made Hamilton a Pulitzer Prize-winning, Tony-sweeping phenomenon.

The Philippine release follows earlier rollouts in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.K., and precedes Australia and New Zealand’s November premiere. Held at the lush Provincial Capitol Lagoon in Negros Occidental, the five-day event will welcome over 2,000 delegates from more than 20 countries. From Indigenous leaders and organic farmers to Michelin-starred chefs and youth activists, it’s a melting pot of voices rallying around one shared belief: food should be good for people, good for the planet, and rooted in tradition.

Organized by Slow Food International and backed by the Philippine government, Terra Madre Asia & Pacific will explore the theme “From Soil to Sea, A Slow Food Journey Through Tastes and Traditions,” spotlighting regional staples like rice, soy, spices, and taro through immersive exhibitions, workshops, and tastings.

The Community Kitchen, where all 61 barangays of Bacolod will serve traditional dishes, promises to be a soul-stirring centerpiece.

The culinary lineup is stacked with international and local chefs, like Johanne Siy (Asia’s Best Female Chef 2023), Wes Kuo (Michelin Green Star), Melissa Miranda (Musang, USA), and regional icons like Jordy Navarra and Chele González, who will take the stage. Mixologists from Manila to Hong Kong will shake up the Slow Drinks pavilion with sustainable sips.

As a movement, Terra Madre Asia & Pacific will launch a new Slow Food Hub and kick off the Slow Food Travel initiative, aiming to reshape how we eat, grow, and connect.

Rock Goes Classical at ‘MPO ROCKS!’ Concert for a Cause

MPOPhoto by The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra/Facebook

The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) returns to the Samsung Performing Arts Theater this November for a one-night-only symphonic rock experience blending music, meaning, and impact.

Get ready to rock on Nov. 29, 2025, as MPO ROCKS! brings the house down with unforgettable orchestral renditions of beloved rock anthems from Queen, Coldplay, and My Chemical Romance to iconic OPM hits by Eraserheads. Fresh from their 25th anniversary sold-out show, MPO is set to make history on stage with some of the country’s most acclaimed voices, like the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Bituin Escalante, and Queen cover band frontman Mig Ayesa.

“During my time with the orchestra, I often wondered how rock music would sound when combined with orchestral arrangements,” said Maestro Rodel Colmenar, MPO founder, on fusing symphony with rock. “I want the audience to experience a different side of the symphony orchestra and see what makes the MPO stand out from other groups.”

But beyond the music, the concert's heart lies in its impact. Part of the proceeds will benefit PARC Foundation’s PARC Aralan program, which helps underprivileged scholars pursue their passion for music and the arts.

“For me, music is about giving as much as it is about performing. Knowing that this concert helps the PARC Aralan scholars makes it so much more meaningful. It’s wonderful to make music while also touching lives,” he added.

Powerhouse diva Bituin Escalante shared her excitement for the upcoming concert and how thrilling it is to step into this rock-symphonic collaboration.

“I know I have been working with MPO for more than 25 years now, but every opportunity to collaborate with them still excites me, no matter the genre,” she said. “It’s special because I rarely get the opportunity to sing rock, much less with the MPO. My favorite rock bands have always had orchestral elements. The Beatles had their ‘Wall of Sound.’ Led Zep’s Kashmir and Stairway. An orchestra always adds an element of grandeur to any song.”

With Bituin’s soulful vocals coupled with Mig’s electric energy and the Madrigal singers’ unmatched artistry, MPO ROCKS! is sure to be a night of incredible performances filled with heart and purpose.

You can book your seats via Ticketworld. Tickets are priced at P2,500 (Upper Balcony), P3,200 (Lower Balcony), P5,000 (Loge Left/Right), P6,000 (Loge Center), P6,200 (Orchestra Left/Right), and P7,000 (Orchestra Center).
