Acclaimed director Jun Lana notched another win with his latest outing, “About Us But Not About Us.” The project was named Best Film under the Critics' Picks section at the 26th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.
"A thrilling psychological chamber drama with surprising plot twists. An unexpected real-time masterpiece, with minimal but perfect film making, About Us is not about us but about how to make cinema with what we have,” the jury said about the film.
The film’s international recognition is something of a personal vindication for director Lana, as it was borne out of acknowledgment of past traumas. In an Instagram post, he described the project as, “Part fiction, and part confessional, the film allowed me to expunge my demons, come to terms with my dark past, and take full control of my narrative.” He also acknowledged Perci Intalan’s, the film’s producer and his former partner of 18 years, role in the making of this movie.
The Philippine Senate also saw fit to recognize the film’s international achievement, as Sen. Ramon Revilla passed a resolution last Nov. 28 commending Lana’s win.
The director announced that “About Us But Not About Us” will be competing in 2023 at Portugal’s Fantastaporto Director’s Week.
