Ready for It, Swifties? UP Will Offer a Taylor Swift Course Soon!

It looks like Swifties’ wildest dreams are coming true, especially for the college students at the University of the Philippines (UP), as the top university has announced that it will offer a course about music sensation Taylor Swift.

Called “Celebrity Studies: Taylor Swift in Focus,” the special broadcasting course will be offered by the UP College of Mass Communication for the second semester of the academic year 2023-2024 under the BA Broadcast Media Arts and Studies program.

It will be handled by one of the university’s most prolific professors, Dr. Cherish Brillon, who is also a Swiftie herself.

According to a report by a Philippine media outlet, the course will discuss Taylor Swift’s “conception, construction, and performances as a celebrity” and explore how the artist connects the media to class, politics, gender, race, and other socio-political aspects.

UP now joins Harvard University, New York University, Stanford University, Berklee College of Music, Ghent University, and the University of Texas among universities offering Taylor Swift-inspired classes, proving the singer-songwriter's immense impact in pop culture and the music industry.

Taylor Swift was previously crowned Spotify’s top global artist for 2023, with more than 26 billion streams. She is also set to bring her “The Eras Tour” to Singapore this year, among other cities.
