Team Filipinas Makes Historic First Win in Women's World Cup vs New Zealand
History has been made as the Philippine women’s national football team snatched its historic first win at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Tuesday, July 25.
Fighting against co-host New Zealand in Group A at Wellington’s Sky Stadium, team Filipinas striker Sarina Bolden headed in a cross from midfielder Sara Eggesvik to score a goal (1-0) in the first 24 minutes of the game.
It was the first and only goal for the women’s team, but it was enough to secure the Philippines its first-ever victory. They held off New Zealand until the end of the match, with game-saving clutches by goalkeeper Olivia Davies-McDaniel.
Team Filipinas is now tied with New Zealand and Switzerland with three points. They will face World No. 12 Norway on Sunday, July 30, at 3 PM in a bid to advance to Round 16. Watch the highlights here and the extended highlights here.
