Automated System Deployed at COVID-19 Vaccination Centres to Ease Health Workers’ Workload
An Automated Vaccine Inoculation Dispenser (AVID) system has been deployed in seven COVID-19 vaccination centres in Singapore to help ease the workload of health care workers, increase accuracy, and enhance their personal safety.
The AVID system was developed together by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research's (A*STAR) Manufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC), Singapore Institiute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), and local systems integrator Sysmatic Global, according to A*STAR on Oct. 12, 2021. It was developed within six weeks from time of conceptualisation.
The easy-to-use AVID reduces the manual step of filling injection syringes with vaccine by automating its extraction from vials. It also disperses bubbles in the syringes with robotic parts and smart sensors.
It is currently customised to support vials of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and has the potential to be customised for the Moderna vaccine.
