LTA: Construction Work for Jurong Region Line Begins, Includes 24 Stations
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) gave a raily exciting update early January as they announced the start of the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL). The future Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line will serve the Jurong area and the western part of Singapore and is expected to open in stages from 2027 to 2029.
The 24-kilometre-long JRL will be the seventh MRT line with 24 stations, including three interchange stations at Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang, and Jurong East.
The groundbreaking and viaduct-launching ceremony was presided by Minister for Transport S Iswaran on Jan. 13.
The JRL is expected to bring 60,000 additional households within a 10-minute walk from a train station, giving them access to key activity nodes in Jurong such as the Jurong Industrial Estate, Jurong Innovation District, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The new line is also expected to cut travel time in the western part of the city-state.
“For example, a trip from Choa Chu Kang MRT station to NTU’s Lee Wee Nam Library will be shortened from 60 minutes to 35 minutes, while commuting from Woodlands MRT to Jurong Island Checkpoint will take 45 minutes instead of around 80 minutes today,” the LTA said in a media release.
