Singapore Ranks First Among World’s Best Roads With Lowest Road Fatalities

Singapore’s roads were named as the best in the world with the highest overall quality score of 9.44/10, according to a global study of online Driver Education resource Zutobi on Sept. 29.

The Lion City is the only nation to score higher than nine out of 10 and is recognised as the country with the fewest road traffic deaths, with a record of 1.69 per 100,000 people, the report has shown. .

Joining Singapore in the top five is the Netherlands with a quality score of 8.62/10, Switzerland (8.58), Japan (8.441), and Denmark (7.59).

On the other hand, Kuwait is in the top spot for the worst roads in the world, earning a score of 1.33/10 and having the third highest number of road traffic fatalities at 19 per 100,000 people. It was followed by Costa Rica (2.24), Georgia (2.33), Panama (2.54), and New Zealand (2.93).

Surprisingly, New Zealand is on the worst list because of its “often mountainous, winding and narrow [roads] due to the nature of the spectacular landscape the country is famous for,” which makes it challenging to drive.

The study measured the area of each country included in the list and the length of its road network via Worlddata.info. The researchers calculated the kilometre of road per 100,000 square kilometre, while the data for the road quality score per country was based on TheGlobalEconomy.com records during 2019 and 2014.

Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority expressed their gratitude for the recognition through a Facebook post on Oct. 4.

“We're thankful for the feather in our cap. We will continue to press on with our efforts to maintain and improve our road infrastructure,” the LTA said.
