Singapore Students Win Gold, Silver Medals at 18th International Geography Olympiad

A team of Singapore students emerged victorious at the 18th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), winning three gold medals and a silver medal. This has put the city-state back on top for the first time since 2014, according to The Straits Times on Sept. 8.

Raffles Institution students Brian Lee Ming Jun and Marcus Lee Jun Rui, along with Hwa Chong Institution’s Wong Kang Zheng, bagged the iGeo gold medals, while Anders Hong from Dunman High School received the silver medal. They defeated more than 200 students from 53 other participating countries and territories.

Organised by the French National Geographical Committee (CNFG), the 2022 iGeo was held online from July 12-18. It involved written, multimedia, and fieldwork tests across different topics, including physical and human geography, and a virtual fieldwork exercise set in Paris, France.

Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing said in a Facebook post that, apart from Zheng’s team, other students also “flown the Singapore flag high” in the international arena.

“Kang Zheng and his teammates were not the only ones who did Singapore proud. Our students brought home a total of 9 Gold medals, 14 Silver medals, 3 Bronze medals and 1 Honourable Mention from the various International Olympiads, and they also came in second in both the International and Online Young Physicists’ Tournaments,” his caption read.
