New Home! 32 Penguins Safely Arrive at Bird Paradise in Mandai Wildlife
Thirty-two penguins have successfully arrived in their new home at Bird Paradise, the Mandai Wildlife Reserve posted via Instagram on May 2.
Each penguin was given a full physical examination and weighed to verify they were in good health and ready for relocation. Penguin keepers carried the smaller species – gentoo, Humboldt, and northern rockhopper penguins – during the transfer. The larger king penguins, on the other hand, were escorted carefully into their respective crates packed with ice.
Mandai Wildlife Group used a truck that maintained a temperature below 12 degrees Celsius to keep them cool throughout their 30-minute migration journey from Jurong Bird Park to Bird Paradise.
Their new habitat, the Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove, is a replica of a sub-Antarctic habitat that covers 3,000 square metres. It is designed with a domed sky illuminated by lighting projectors that simulate the Aurora Australis and the transition from day to night. There are two seven-metre-deep saltwater acrylic tanks where the penguins can dive and swim around in.
The public can visit the penguins starting May 8. For more information, check out this link.
