Restaurant history and story: Cropping up in the urban heart of Kowloon, Campsite at Langham Place is the restaurant’s second branch after its first location at Quarry Bay’s K11 Atelier building. Opening in early 2023, the concept’s glamping theme is fully realised amongst the faux outdoor environment that has been built into the back end it occupies on the always-bustling mall’s fourth floor.

What’s the vibe and venue like: Being able to host over 100 people amongst its venue adorned in light-washed wooden garden furniture, the latest Campsite restaurant is one that whisks diners away from the hoi polloi of Mong Kok into a bright vision of sunny days spent picnicking with your crew.

How much does it cost: HK$868 for a meal shared between four people. Drinks not included.

What is the menu about: Consisting mainly of crowd-pleasing dishes designed to be doled out amongst happy campers, the best way to enjoy Campsite’s offerings involves heading over with a group and ordering a variety of options in each category. The selection is split into sharing appetizers of a hearty ”small plates” variety or with some greens, alongside pizza, pasta, fireside mains, meat dishes, and desserts.

What did we order: Marscapone Tomato Salad (HK$88), Ribeye Steak Blistered Padron Peppers (HK$238), Campfire Grilled Whole Lobster (HK$298), Dutch Oven Smoked Yellow Chicken Rice (HK$156), and Bonfire S’mores (HK$88).

Marscapone Tomato Salad: Whetting the appetite with its juicy sweet flavour, the tomatoes were fresh and each bite was well marinated in a generous amount of pesto. The salty anchovy made for an interesting contrast against the tomato. Cheese is always welcome as a seat at the table, though the textural quality of burrata may have been a better fit than the mascarpone.

Ribeye Steak with Blistered Padron Peppers: The peppers were a nice touch that could perhaps have been left to char a little longer for that extra smoky campfire taste, though they made for a tasty bite to complement the savoury and well-done roast along with the accompanying sauce.

Campfire Grilled Whole Lobster: Served on an adorable mini grill, the lobster is heated in front of us for a little while until the thin layer of cheese under its shell melted to coat the bouncy meat inside. Tucking into the meat after dipping it in the deliciously melted butter served on the side, I could see this being a cheat meal that delivers on the devilishness.

Dutch Oven Smoked Yellow Chicken Rice: Presented in a kitschy cauldron-looking pot, the carb in this course falls close to Spanish arroz or risotto which has soaked up all the goodness of the chicken. Succulent and flavourful, the chicken remains the main character of the dish and pairs well with the crisp bok choy.

Bonfire S’mores: Here is where all the fun vibes behind the concept really shine through, as we were surprised with a tiny concrete campfire of our own to crowd around and cook from. Each taking a marshmallow and joining the circle, the DIY S’mores were a playful closer to the meal that brought smiles to our faces and got us reminiscing on our own outdoor adventure stories.

What we liked: The chicken rice was a star dish, and the novelty of adding some flames to an item’s presentation will never cease to amaze any Hong Kong foodie, ourselves included. Opting for a signature beverage from the drinks menu is also highly recommended, with the Peanut Butter Honeycomb Milkshake, Strawberry Latte, and Cucumber Lemonade serving as highlights of our experience.

What we didn’t like: For a group of four, we would recommend perhaps adding another carb item or two for a more well-rounded experience. With such an easily accessible location that is yet cleverly tucked away for that away-from-the-city campgrounds feel, the setting is closer to a quaint cafe than a sit-down restaurant. This could easily be one of their strengths had they leaned into it a bit more!

What you should order: Dutch Oven Smoked Yellow Chicken Rice, Bonfire S’mores, Peanut Butter Honeycomb Milkshake, and Strawberry Latte
