The city is brimming with fantastic ethical rehoming centres, shelters, and charities that cater to rehabilitating stray, abandoned, and poorly dogs and puppies in Hong Kong homes. Here’s the best places you can go to adopt dogs in the city!

Catherine’s Puppies

Sai Kung’s Catherine’s Puppies aims to rescue dogs and puppies across New Territories and Hong Kong Island, providing A-grade care in their small shelter located in Ho Chung, Sai Kung. Founded in 2015 by Catherine Lumsden, the shelter is open from 11AM to 4PM allows the dogs to roam free, with regular dog adoption events and postings for dogs ready for adoption posted on Instagram and Facebook.

Home for Homeless Dog

Three-year-old Home for Homeless Dog is Tai Po’s central shelter and kennel rescuing newborn pups, injured and stray dogs, and dogs ready for rehousing. Founded in 2019 by Hong Konger Angela Chan who sold her jewellery collection and New Territories houses to fund the shelter, the space is open by appointment #adoptdon’tshop. To apply for adoption of her furry friends, you’ll be required to fill in a form to meet the basic requirements and then make an appointment to visit.

Hong Kong Dog Rescue

One of the larger centres for sheltering dogs and puppies in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) operates two no-kill rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming locations in two spaces. Their Ap Lei Chau homing centre houses small dogs and puppies, with their Tai Po shelter housing more than 400 medium to large-sized dogs waiting for adoption.

HKDR was founded in 2003 for the purpose of saving stray dogs, puppies, and ex-breeders from the Hong Kong Government's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) Animal Management Centres. Puppies awaiting adoption are taken to Whiskers N Paws in Ap Lei Chau every Sunday from 2PM to 5PM to rehome!

TAILS Lantau

Team for Animals in Lantau South (TAILS) is a non-profit volunteer-run society assisting with dog welfare and behavioural -treatment for abandoned and stray dogs in South Lantau. Working with local communities and future adoptees, TAILS offers classes to encourage responsible animal handling and care, whilst providing medical attention and protection to dogs, as well as other animals in need, abandoned, or abused.

Hong Kong Paws

Registered as an animal welfare society in the city, Hong Kong Paws is a rescue organisation that assists dogs and cats, with a majority of being animal's mongrels and domestic short hairs. The charity work with local animal shelters in New Territories and Lantau Island to provide care and rehabilitation, and financial aid to rehome dogs and puppies. Use their online form to apply to adopt or foster a dog in their shelter.

Paws United Charity

Non-profit volunteer rescue organization Paws United Charity (PUC) opened in May 2021 established as the charity’s adoption centre re-homing puppies, located inside Repulse Bay’s The Pulse. The adoption centre advertises cute pups up adoption on their Facebook and Instagram, with an aim to house dogs rescued in Hong Kong. The centre is open daily from 11AM to 6 PM.

Sai Kung Stray Friends

Sai Kung Stray Friends is Sai Kung-based non-profit shelter that assists stray, abandoned, sick and injured dogs with much-needed medical care and rehabilitation. Housing more than 100 dogs at their village kennel, all looking for homes, visitors can pre-book and visit to adopt in morning (10:30 AM to 1 PM) and afternoon (3:30 PM to 4:30PM) sessions.

SPCA

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) rescues and rehomes a wide range of animals, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, reptiles, turtles and even birds, assisting with all aspects of animal welfare, behaviour training, and medical help. With their headquarters in Wan Chai, adoptees can visit centres across the city to find their next furry friend to live life with!
