Phillips Presents Re Trace Kusama to Shiota Exhibition Opening Apr 18 1

Phillips, the renowned international auction house, will showcase a unique exhibition ‘(Re)Trace Kusama to Shiota’ in Hong Kong from Apr. 18 to 30, which explores the connections between two of Japan's most prominent female contemporary artists; Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota.

The exhibition will feature over 40 works from both artists and will be open to the public at Phillips’ galleries in West Kowloon, exposing the work of a non-selling group of artworks by Chiharu Shiota, the largest collection of the artist's works ever presented to the Hong Kong public.

This group of non-selling pieces has been provided on loan by Mr. Jay Pang of ARTICKS. Additionally, the exhibition will include a series of iconic creations by the two female artists available for purchase through Phillips’ Private Sales.

The exhibition highlights the ways in which both artists have utilised fabric and clothing to communicate complex personal emotions of loss and memory. Among the exhibition highlights are Chiharu Shiota’s ‘State of Being (Dress)’ and Yayoi Kusama’s ‘Six Guests’. The exhibition also features other works, such as ‘Death of an Illusion’ by Yayoi Kusama and Skin by Chiharu Shiota.

According to Charlotte Raybaud, Head of Evening Sale, Phillips Hong Kong, this exhibition demonstrates the auction house's ongoing commitment to enhancing the West Kowloon Cultural District as a world-class global destination for arts and culture.

“We are delighted to present this first of its kind exhibition exploring the fascinating parallels between two remarkable women artists of our time. While Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota have had considerable exposure and solo exhibitions across a number of major cities in the world, their works have never been brought together on such a scale and juxtaposed thematically,” Raybaud said.
