Many of us are propelled to try new things and become more productive as we embrace the new year. But if you just aren’t feeling exuberant and would rather lie low during the first few days of the year, that’s okay, too. After all, a nice and quiet time at home sounds irresistible following days of holiday cheers and meet-ups with friends and loved ones. Like it always does, Netflix is giving us an excuse to have an extended laidback holiday with a slew of new movies and series to binge-watch this January 2022. Check ‘em out!

‘The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window’

This dark comedy thriller miniseries puts the spotlight on Anna (Kristen Bell), a heartbroken woman who spends her days watching people by her window while drinking wine. Her life takes a dark turn when she witnesses a suspected brutal murder across her house involving a handsome man who just moved in. The limited series is said to be a parody of all the “Woman in the…” titles, although the creators said their show is more of a play on the genre than poking fun at it.

‘The House’

Produced by Nexus Studio, “The House” features three unconnected stories that happened in the same, er, house. Netflix described the stop-motion anthology as “eccentric dark comedy,” complete with cats and mice that can speak. Emma de Swaef, Marc Roels, Niki Lindroth von Bahr, and Paloma Baeza directed the show.

‘The Journalist’

If you did a marathon of the “Home Alone” franchise during the holidays and want something serious, we recommend “The Journalist,” a Japanese drama series based on the award-winning film of the same name. It centres on protagonist Anna Matsuda (Ryoko Yonekura), a Toto newspaper journalist who helps expose the political crimes and scandals in Japan. The original film won major awards at the 43rd Japan Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Available on Jan. 13

‘Ozark’ Season 4

This thrilling drama is back with a fourth season, which will be shown in two parts of seven episodes each. It follows the Byrde family and their transition from having a normal life in Chicago’s suburban neighbourhoods to getting entangled with criminals in a remote summer resort in Missouri. This is a recommended binge if you’re into survival stories, capitalism, and crime dramas.

Available on: Jan. 21

‘Neymar: The Perfect Chaos’

Netflix isn’t letting this month go without a docuseries on a high-profile personality, and this time, it brings the spotlight on soccer star Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior. The limited series follows Neymar and his rise to fame, his heyday, and his adventure with the Brazilian National team and Paris Saint-Germain. Expect to see interviews from football legends like David Beckham, Lione Messi, and Kylian Mbappé.

Available on: Jan. 25

‘Heavenly Bites: Mexico’

We all have that one favourite food we can’t get out of our system no matter how unhealthy because they are just so good that it makes the potential trip to the hospital worth it. The Mexican culinary landscape is no stranger to sinful food staples and Netflix is banking on this with “Heavenly Bites: Mexico,” a “show about the food that Mexicans hate loving.”

From a 50-centimetre hotdog and chocolates on top of more chocolates flanked by gummy bears, to beer and lime juice with chili-based sauces, Mexico’s wild and eclectic cuisine will take you to an exciting gastronomic ride!
