LGBTQ Shows Films to Binge Watch on Netflix Hong Kong This Pride Month

These days, efforts to make the LGBTQ+ community more visible in the media have been palpable, as seen in shows and films that do away with heteronormative narratives that only misrepresent or underrepresent the LGBTQ+.

Although these efforts are not always perfect — we have yet to fully move past the point of misrepresentation and discrimination of LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream TV and cinema, after all — we can say that such initiatives to tell more diverse stories of the community are alive and well.

This Pride month, enrich your mind and soul with these six shows and films on Netflix Hong Kong that reflect and portray LGBTQ+ culture.

This British series is a coming-of-age story that centers on Charlie and Nick, two boys who meet at secondary school. The duo starts off as unlikely friends, only for their genuine friendship to blossom into a romance. As they find themselves bound by their love, the two must now navigate the terrain towards self-discovery and acceptance.

'Sex Education'

This groundbreaking show has been heralded as one of the best on TV right now, thanks to its representation of what it means to be a teen, from the social awkwardness, intimacy, and even pregnancy to sexual assault and sexuality, among others. It has also been praised for being LGBTQ-inclusive, as its nuanced portrayals of the community is a masterclass in itself when it comes to queer visibility in the media.

'Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration'

This stand-up special sees the gathering of the best LGBTQ+ comedians in the industry for one night. Released in Netflix Hong Kong on June 9, 2022, "Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration" includes the presence and performances of comics Ani DiFranco, Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho, Rosie O'Donnell, Sarah Paulson, Tig Notaro, Lily Tomlin, and more.

'Super Drags'

This animated comedy series follows the lives of Patrick, Ralph, and Donizete, three young gay men who work at a department store. By night, however, they transform into their inner Divas — Lemon Chiffon, Safira Cian, and Scarlet Carmesim — with the mission to bring down the evil Drag Queen Lady Elza for her crimes against the LGBTQ+ community.

'A Secret Love'

This documentary centers on the love story between the late women's professional baseball player Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel. "A Secret Love," which was released on April 29, 2020, spotlighted the love between the two women, who remained in the closet for most of their lives. With their love spanning seven decades, Donahue and Henschel prove that despite the hardships of coming out, aging, and illness, their love still prevailed above all.

'The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson'

The Black trans woman activist Marsha P. Johnson was known as "the Rosa Parks of the LGBT movement" due to her position as one of the leaders of the Stonewall resistance. This 2017 film by David France reexamines the death of Johnson in 1992; her body was found afloat in the Hudson River and although her death was initially ruled as a suicide, many believe she was murdered.
