Macau's 36th MIMF to Kick off This October with Stellar Lineup
The Macao International Music Festival (MIMF) is set to dazzle opera and classical music lovers with its 36th edition, happening from Oct. 4 to Nov. 4.
Themed “And the Stars Shine,” this year’s festival will have a total of 12 programs and 16 outreach activities, featuring up-and-coming musicians and seasoned maestros with their timeless melodies.
The festival will kick off with “Tosca—Opera in Three Acts” by Giacomo Puccini, one of the most famous operas in the world. It will be presented by the Macao Orchestra and the Mariinsky Orchestra, helmed by world-renowned classical music conductor Valery Gergiev.
Gergiev will also lead the Mariinsky Orchestra in two more concerts, which will feature classic Russian music from Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Rachmaninoff, among others.
Acclaimed violinist Leonidas Kavakos will also team up with the ApollΩn Ensemble to perform a repertoire of Bach’s violin concertos, while legendary pianist Ivo Pogorelich will present an enchanting performance of music from the Romantic period.
One of the United States’ leading music ensembles, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, will also be doing their interpretation of iconic pieces by Mahler, Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn, among others. French pianist Hélène Grimaud and the Camerata Salzburg will also be presenting a stellar concert featuring classics from the Viennese School.
Presenting elegant jazz concerts are Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awardee and legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, as well as renowned American jazz musician Wynton Marsalis. Meanwhile, world-renowned Portuguese Fado diva Mariza and the Macao Chinese Orchestra, under the baton of Chinese conductor Tsung Yeh, will present the closing performance with a blend of Western poetry and Chinese chords.
Tickets to the 36th MIMF will be available via Macau Ticket starting Aug. 18, with an early bird discount of 30% for those buying from Aug. 18 to 25 and 20% from Aug. 26 onwards.
