Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho led a Hong Kong delegation to Macau on Aug. 15, 2023. The trip’s mission was to exchange views with local officials on a variety of key areas, including housing policies, overall planning of Macau, and the progress of public works in the region.

This visit was marked as a significant step toward fostering closer ties and collaboration between Hong Kong and Macau in developing public policy.

Macau's Secretary for Transport & Public Works, Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, and other representatives of Macau's transport and public works sectors accompanied the delegation in touring the New Urban Zone Area A's economic housing exhibition area. The aim was to give the Hong Kong officials a deep understanding of Macau’s five-tier system for housing provision, as implemented by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.

In a fruitful discussion with her Macau counterparts, Ms. Ho shared insights into Hong Kong’s strategies for enriching the housing ladder and increasing the supply of affordable homes.

Beyond policy, Ms. Ho's visit was insightful on a humanitarian level too. The delegation visited the elderly housing exhibition area and a temporary housing project executed by Macau Urban Renewal. During these visits, Ms. Ho shared her experiences and visions on building age-friendly communities and navigating the complexities of urban redevelopment.

The delegation also reached out to the local community. Ms. Ho paid a visit the social housing units in Toi San and economic housing units of Edifício do Bairro da Ilha Verde. These visits were designed to give the delegation a firsthand look at the ancillary facilities and to understand the daily lives of the neighbourhood’s community.

Ms. Ho expressed her vision of this trip as a step towards strengthened housing collaboration between Hong Kong and Macau, ultimately aimed at enriching and improving housing policies in both cities.
