PH Showcases Traditional Weaves in First Exhibit at Nairobi National Museum

The Philippines opened its first-ever exhibition at the Nairobi National Museum in Kenya on June 17, as per a press release by the Philippine Embassy in Kenya via Facebook on June 19.

Titled "Perfected by Tradition: Philippine Weaves," the exhibit was organized by the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the National Museums of Kenya (NMK).

The Nairobi National Museum is known as Kenya's premier museum and attracts thousands of visitors annually. More than 50 guests from the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage, NMK, ASEAN Nairobi Committee, and faculty and students from Kenyatta University's Department of Fashion Design and Marketing and Department of Fine Arts and Design graced the opening of the exhibit.

Ambassador Marie Charlotte Tang also recognized Kenya's vibrant textile traditions, saying the exhibit is an opportunity for Kenyans to learn of their likenesses with Filipinos.

"Philippine weaves are a tapestry of different colors, textures and materials. Every detail of a traditional textile is a product of craftsmanship and has a story to tell," Tang was quoted as saying. "The exhibit provides its visitors a glimpse into the lives, social structures, beliefs, and values of the Filipino people."

"Perfected by Tradition: Philippine Weaves" is on show at the Nairobi National Museum until July 17.
