Poblacion Barangay Chief Issues Resolution Opposing Use of the Term 'Pobla'
Teeming with dive bars and live-music venues, Poblacion is regarded as the center of Makati’s nightlife. As the entertainment district continued to evolve as a hip neighborhood, people started calling it “Pobla,” which is an abbreviation for the full name of Poblacion. However, moving forward, you may want to think twice before using this slang term.
On Feb. 7, Poblacion Barangay Captain Benhur Cruz issued Barangay Resolution 2020-689, which described the use of the colloquial term as “offensive and derogatory to the community” in a now-deleted Facebook post.
According to the resolution, which was ”unanimously” agreed upon by the council, residents “highly [consider] the image and [value] the rich heritage of Poblacion including its name.”
“"THIS IS BARANGAY POBLACION!” Cruz captioned in his post. “STOP USING THE TERM 'POBLA!'"
He also used the hashtags #NOtoPOBLA" and "#YEStoPOBLACION."
Shortly after Cruz posted the resolution on Facebook, it gained mixed reactions from netizens on Twitter. Here’s what some online users have to say.
