Pawsitive Living: Here are Five Things Every Pet Needs

5 Needs of a Happy Pet

In the Asia-Pacific region, more than half of people (59%) have a pet in their home, with the Philippines having the highest dog ownership ratio — 67% or two-thirds of all households owning one or more dogs. On the flip side, 42% of Filipinos own cats, making it clear that the Philippines is one of the most animal-loving nations.

But beyond being adorable companions, pets are more than just animals; they are family, and with that comes the responsibility of proper care.

Global leader in pet health nutrition, Royal Canin, just launched a children’s storybook designed to nurture empathy, understanding, and responsible pet ownership among families and young readers in the Philippines.

Welcome Home, Rocky & Charlie!” is more than just a story, but a delightful way to instill values and good habits among children who are looking to adopt pet companions. Through this story, we learn everyday lessons that allow families to understand what it truly means to welcome pets into their home and how it goes beyond just playtime and cuddles.

“Responsible pet ownership is about more than just meeting basic needs,” shared Ann Madelene Garcia, Pet Specialty Retail Head at Royal Canin Philippines. “It’s about recognizing the unique personalities of our pets, providing the right nutrition, and creating an environment where they feel safe and loved. By teaching these values early, we empower families, especially young children, to make informed decisions and build lasting bonds with their pets.”

During the launch, we also got to listen to Kitsie Torres, DVM, Scientific Communications Manager and Vet at Royal Canin, who taught us about the things our pets need to live long, happy, and healthy lives. Here’s what we’ve learned:

Top 5 Needs of Happy Pets

Food & Water

As with any living being, nutrition is the top fundamental need for our pets. Kitsie mentioned how pets need to have access to fresh water throughout the day and are to be fed thrice (puppies and kittens) or twice (adults) a day, depending on their health needs and activity level.

Royal Canin’s “Start of Life” range offers tailored nutritional solutions for puppies and kittens, with products focusing on particular needs at each stage of growth. If you’re adopting a dog or a cat for the first time, you’ll most likely come across this brand on your first visit to the clinic or pet shops, as it’s been trusted by the pet industry as a reliable and nutritious pet food brand.

Pet bowls and feeders are also some of the first things you need to get upon adopting a pet. Ceramic and stainless steel bowls are popular among pet owners. Local brand Ollie has double-walled stainless steel bowls that keep water cooler for 20% longer than the average dog bowl. These bowls are also available in a range of colors and can be customized with your pet’s name! You can find them at their official online store on at their flagship store in BGC.

Food doesn’t just mean everyday meals. It’s also about keeping your pet’s appetite healthy and their relationship with food positive. A little reward goes a long way, especially during training, and what better way to encourage good behavior than with treats? Just be mindful of when you give them, as offering treats before meals could spoil their appetite.

Special milestones, like birthdays, can also be celebrated with pet-friendly cakes made just for your fur babies. And since it can get quite warm in the city, hydration is key. Make sure your pets always have access to fresh water, and for an extra treat, you can whip up refreshing fruit shakes to help them cool down during the summer months.

Shelter & Comfort

Taking home a pet either from a trusted breeder or through adoption at animal shelters takes a lot of responsibility as you’re giving these animals a forever home.

One of the first things you need to prepare before taking your pet home is their comfort zones, such as crates for dogs and towers and caves for cats. Although most would allow their pets to run around their homes freely, it’s still important that your pets have a space for themselves — a haven that caters to their instincts.

For pets with special needs, such as those requiring orthopedic support, specialized products can make a huge difference in their comfort and well-being. Orthopedic beds and supportive harnesses like those from local brand, Dogly Orthopedics, are designed to ease pressure points and reduce discomfort, ensuring your furry pals stay happy and cared for.

Cat

Vet Care

One of the most important things you need to do as a pet owner is to register your pet with a vet clinic near you. Puppies and kittens need a lot of care in their early years, so expect to frequent the vet for their vaccinations and check-ups.

Pet owners are usually given a record book, which logs their pet’s shots and medications so it’s important to keep this on hand whenever you visit.

Check-ups and pet medications can be just as expensive as our own hospital bills, so we encourage fur parents to look into pet insurance like Life by Petto to have a financial safety net for unexpected veterinary costs.

Play & Exercise

Beyond the essentials for survival, pets also need play and exercise to stay healthy. Without enough activity, they risk obesity, which can negatively affect their overall well-being, making them more prone to suffer from diseases like metabolic disorders, joint problems, diabetes, and even cardiac and respiratory problems. Regular exercise not only keeps them fit but also stimulates their minds, prevents boredom, and reduces stress. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to strengthen your bond with your furry companions.

Take your dogs for a walk around the neighborhood or play a game of fetch in the park. For cat owners, stimulate your feline’s hunter instincts by using cat toys like stuffed mice or stick toys with feathers. Additionally, you can also explore pet-friendly destinations in the city. There are plenty of fun ways to keep your pets active and happy!

Dog Running

Love & Attention

Beyond providing food, shelter, and basic care, pets thrive when showered with love and affection. Emotional health matters just as much as physical health. When pets feel loved and bonded with their owners, it can translate into better immunity, reduced stress, and even longer lives.

Central to this bond is oxytocin, the so-called “love hormone,” which has been shown in dogs to increase social bonding and support well-being. So yes, give your pets their basic survival needs, and make time for cuddles, walks, and playtime, because the emotional connection you build doesn’t just feel good, it helps them live healthier, happier lives.

There are plenty of ways to show love for your pets that go beyond providing essentials. There’s giving them baths, shopping for cute accessories, or even getting matching clothes.

From Him, to Him: Brovage Opens Its Ultra-Luxury Clinic for Men

20251006 BrovagePhoto by The Beat Asia

Men have found a new haven for all things sexual health and wellness, all housed under one luxurious roof: Brovage. Gone are the days when men were boxed into one specific version of what it means to be a man. Today’s men are redefining masculinity. As the men behind this luxurious clinic suggest, men are becoming more and more banidoso (vain), but in the best way possible. So, creating a space where men can confidently seek out tailored care for their specific needs has been this clinic’s primary goal, delivering personalized care — from him, to him.

Nestled in the heart of Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Brovage serves as the Philippines’ first-ever luxury medical clinic created exclusively for men, specializing in sexual health, aesthetic urology, and advanced wellness treatments. The clinic is led by Chief Executive Officer and sexual dysfunction expert Dr. Frederick Mendiola, who — together with Dr. Z’Shen Teo and Dr. Alan Tan — brought this dream to life, intending to help men regain their confidence and become the best versions of themselves.

Regarding the meaning behind Brovage, Mendiola told The Beat Asia that they even hired someone to come up with a simple yet impactful name. “The meaning of Brovage is ‘Brothers, Vitality in Age.’ That means, any age group is welcome here.” For them, Brovage is more than just a clinic — it's a brotherhood. It's about helping men reclaim their power. And every man is welcome, regardless of age.

A Discreet Haven for Him

While the world has been slowly dismantling harmful ideations of masculinity, the stigma surrounding men seeking aesthetic or sexual care is still prevalent. That’s why Mendiola, Teo, and Tan (medical leaders from Singapore and the Philippines) conceived a space for men where their needs are addressed discreetly, in a place that feels like a secret. The three world-class doctors carefully selected a location nestled on the second floor of the W High Street Building — all without flashy signage or a very public display of branding. The clinic’s magic lies within, where guests are greeted by a lush interior and a bar that adds an extra layer of comfort and hospitality.

During its grand opening last Sept. 30, 2025, hosted by Paolo Abrera, the event was graced by VIP guests, including Dr. Aivee Teo, actor Jake Cuenca, model and actor Victor Basa, and professional basketball player Anthony Semerad, among others. But the true star of the evening was, of course, the clinic itself. Brovage’s interior remains true to the clinic’s mission: providing men with a refined space. Brovage, however, is more than just a luxurious clinic. What it truly offers is medical services focused on men’s sexual health and wellness, complete with cutting-edge machines and treatments. And its approach extends beyond sexual health, too.

The clinic also provides longevity and wellness treatments, such as bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, mental health assessment, and medical acupuncture, as well as male aesthetics and aesthetic urology, including hair treatments, facial, butt enhancement, and more. Overall, the clinic’s goal is to empower men to take control of their health, their performance, and their lives.

“Brovage is a one-stop shop for men — for face, body. It’s a safe space for men,” said Mendiola. “Brovage is not a conventional clinic or hospital. We purposely did that because we want them to feel relaxed the moment that they step into our clinic.”

The idea for Brovage emerged from the sudden realization that men are increasingly becoming vain. “A lot of men are actually becoming vain. Before, men seeking consultation were only 20%. Recently, there's been an increase in the percentage,” Mendiola explained. “About sexual dysfunction, halos wala talagang nagpapatingin (there's hardly anyone getting checked) because of the stigma and our society.”

Brovage wasn’t conceived solely to provide men with a safe, judgment-free space. Its mission goes beyond supporting the brotherhood. Mendiola added: “Our goal is to actually educate Filipinos that sex is not taboo and that it’s very important, especially if you’re getting older.”

Brovage Offers Top-Tier Care

Brovage’s goal is all encapsulated in five pillars: “Reclaim Your Strength on Your Terms,” “Feel Powerful in Every Part of Life,” “Look as Sharp as You Feel,” “Redefine Aging Unapologetically,” and “Restore Confidence Where It Matters Most.” Its goal is to open the minds of Filipinos about sexual health. While Filipinos are becoming more open about the intimate aspects of their lives, sex remains arguably a taboo topic in the country. A mere mention of it is still often met with laughter — or worse, disapproval. Brovage aims to change that, especially for men who continue to feel shame around their sexual health and other deeply personal concerns.

During the grand opening, Teo shared the story of how Brovage came to be. “We all have our own issues, but we don’t want to say anything,” said Teo. “So where do people go? That’s the question. That’s the question I pose to Erick (Dr. Mendiola): ‘Erick, when are we going to do something for the brotherhood?’ They need to have a place where they can get answers.”

Of course, Brovage is nothing without the minds of the three men behind it, offering expertise and years of experience in their respective fields. To book an appointment, you only need to follow three easy steps: choose the service you need, schedule a private consultation, and confirm your appointment through the secure checkout. The services Brovage offers are as follows:

Ladies, Don’t Let Your Red Days Ruin Your Confidence and Make Life Hard

20250925 ModessPhoto by Modess

Real talk: Your period shouldn’t dictate the rhythm of your entire month.

For too long, we’ve been taught to accept that having cramps, fatigue, and discomfort is normal — as if it were the price of being a woman. But here’s the truth: it doesn’t have to be that way.

Yes, the menstrual cycle is natural and essential to every woman’s life, but it doesn’t have to mean pain, uncertainty, or disruption. With the right care, your period week can feel just as manageable and empowering as any other.

That’s where menstrual care comes in starting with something simple, yet vital, as choosing the right pad.

On Sept. 4, 2025, Modess gathered women, advocates, and health experts for the Modess Comfortverse, a lifestyle and wellness event designed to rethink what menstrual care should feel like — empowering, reliable, and gentle. Between candid conversations, practical wellness tips, and a hands-on exploration of Modess’ hypoallergenic line, the afternoon unfolded as both a celebration and an empowering re-education of menstrual health.

Speakers and representatives gathered for a photo during the Modess Comfortverse
(From left) Ayn Bernos, Modess ambassador; Katee Tolabing, Senior Brand Manager, Kenvue Philippines; Dr. Kristine Tangco, OB-GYN; Dr. Ayees Mendoza, Dermatologist; Steffi Lucero; Isabel Lacson-Ruiz, Franchise Lead for Feminine Care and Skin Health, Kenvue Philippines | Courtesy of Modess Philippines

After all, our earliest lessons about the female body often taught us to see pain as inseparable from womanhood. The Modess Comfortverse challenged to change that narrative — and to prove that periods don’t have to mean suffering.

The afternoon opened with a powerful question from Ms. Isa Lacson-Ruiz, Franchise Lead for Feminine Care and Skin Health at Kenvue Philippines. “If it’s made for the most intimate part of our body, shouldn't it be the gentlest thing you wear?” Everyone’s resounding 'Yes' set the tone for the rest of the afternoon, one filled with enthusiasm to change the narrative on menstrual care.

At the heart of the event was Modess’ campaign, simple yet strikingly relevant: “Feel the Gentle Power of Modess.” No woman should ever have to choose between protection and comfort especially on her red days. “Through this campaign, we’re advocating for menstrual care that doesn’t just protect,” Ms. Isa Lacson-Ruiz added. “Our hypoallergenic top sheet is also a promise of comfort, especially where women need it the most.”

Taboo No More: Talking About What’s Normal

Speakers talk about vaginal health and skincare

At the event, medical experts opened conversations long considered taboo — from menstrual cycles to vaginal health — reframing these topics as essential parts of women’s health and wellness.

To set the record straight, OB-GYN Dr. Kristine Tangco explained that a normal menstrual cycle occurs every 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28. “If you get your menses before 21 days, that’s too frequent. If you get it after 35 days, that’s too long,” she shared. “So, you have to go see your OB-GYN and get yourself checked.”

She also emphasized that menstruation could look different for everyone; some bleed for just three to four days, while others up to seven. And for those wondering how to gauge their flow, she suggested tracking it through the number of pads they use in a day. “An average woman uses three to four regular pads a day.”

When it comes to period pain, Dr. Tangco explained that it’s normal to feel a bit of dysmenorrhea. But if cramps are severe enough to need constant pain relievers or a trip to the emergency room, that’s when it’s time to consult your OB-GYN.

Caring for Down There

Speakers talk about menstrual care, wellness tips, and more.

Our intimate area needs consistent care, especially on red days. That means practicing good hygiene and changing pads regularly — a step that many might skip because of busy schedules. Dr. Tangco emphasized the importance of changing frequently. “We might change our pads every four to six hours, but you know your body best,” she said. “If your flow is heavier, change more often.  At night, because menstrual flow slows down, it’s enough to change twice: once before bed and again after six to seven hours.”

And because it requires constant care, it’s also one of the most sensitive areas of our bodies. In fact, it’s even more sensitive than our faces! Choosing hypoallergenic products is the best way to care for that area down there, to keep it cool, dry, and protected from infection or irritation.

Think about it this way: if you’re very careful about the products you use on your face, shouldn’t you use safe products for your intimate area too? As Dr. Kristine Tangco always advises her patients, “Use products that you would use for your babies.”

Adding to this, dermatologist Dr. Ayees Mendoza echoed the importance of choosing the right products: “No matter what your age is, it’s important to choose hypoallergenic products because they’re fragrance-free, breathable, and made from gentle materials.”

Lifestyle personality and body positivity advocate Ayn Bernos also agreed, sharing how her feminine care choices were influenced by her skin sensitivity. “I always thought that irritation and itchiness were just a part of it. But it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable all the time,” she shared. “Irritation doesn’t have to happen every single month; I can be protected but still be comfortable.”

Menstrual care isn’t about choosing between comfort and protection — it’s about having both, even in the most sensitive times of the month. More than just a pad, Modess stands as a quiet but powerful ally, helping women move with confidence and focus on what truly matters — worry-free, and without compromise.

Let Your Skin Speak: Lactacyd Unveils Beauty Beyond the Surface

Lactacyd Museum of Speaking SkinPhoto by The Beat Asia

Skincare has a way of making us feel our best. It’s that little boost of confidence that helps us glow inside and out. But just as no two women are the same, our skin speaks in different ways, asking for care that’s unique to us.

Listening closely to those needs, Lactacyd, long trusted for its feminine hygiene expertise and natural ingredients like lactic acid and lactoserum, has reimagined the way we see skin. Last Sept. 24, 2025, the brand unveiled the Museum of Speaking Skin at Shangri-La Plaza Mall, an immersive experience blending art, science, and self-care. This museum doubled as a launchpad for its fresh new look, improved formulation, and body wash line designed to keep skin bright and healthy, and is a step towards the brand’s bold ambition of becoming a total skin health brand for the whole family.

When Skin Speaks

Nestled at the heart of Shangri-La Plaza’s East Atrium, the Museum of Speaking Skin by Lactacyd is a walkthrough installation with thoughtfully curated rooms designed to educate, inspire, and encourage visitors to listen to their skin and discover new ways to care for themselves.

Upon entry, you’ll see a wall mapping out the brand’s longstanding history and milestones. There’s also an information touch screen board where you can learn more about their product lines in detail, and a children’s playground complete with photo spots and a ball pit — a nod to the brand’s Baby Wash line.

But the evident highlight of the museum is the 14 commissioned artworks created by an impressive roster of celebrated Filipina artists, who translated their personal stories into shared themes of strength, beauty, and confidence. Each work of art brought a unique perspective, coming together to show skin not just as a surface, but as a canvas shaped by life’s experiences.

Present at the event were two of the artists. Michelle Alde, whose evocative “Of Poise and Power” piece explored the quiet strength of femininity. The image is that of a woman with striking red heels against a backdrop of pink sheets.

“A lot of my work is centered on femininity,” Michelle said as she explained the technical aspects of her piece. “Like the softness of pinks, and the red, which symbolizes one’s boldness and confidence. Growing up, I was very insecure about my skin. I couldn’t tell anyone about it. With that, it reflects outwards in how I present myself. But now, since coming of age, I’ve become more confident and bold, which reflects in this artwork.”

Meanwhile, artist Zee Venti created two pieces for the museum, one focused on the “red days” and the other on confidence. “I wanted to show the emotional and physical changes a woman goes through, but also focus on the positive side,” she shared on her artwork, “Passing Phases.” “At the end of the day, it’s just a cycle; it ends, and we return to our usual selves. The colors I used are very bright because I wanted to evoke that sense of assurance towards others.”

Other notable artists included Marga Zablan-Ventinilla, who reflected resilience in “Confidence,” Ana Luciano Fernandez, who captured a toddler’s carefree joy in “Skin at Play,” and Bea Pascubillo, painting a mother with a newborn in “Layers of Care.” Also contributing were Arianna Bongato, Bea Fernandez, Leahrly Curitana, Janet Arboleda-Ballacer, Clarisse Alfonso, Nonie Manuel, Sca Miranda, Fern Aboloda, and Kizzel Mina. Each artwork comes with a QR code that you can scan, which leads to an audio recording of the artists explaining their piece. We thought this gave visitors a more immersive experience, allowing us to understand and deeply relate to each of their skin stories.

“The blending of the two is basically Lactacyd’s identity. We want to put forward our science, and at the same time we want that science to be accessible, understandable, and appreciated by the average woman,” Jamie Superable-Martin, Brand Manager of Lactacyd, told The Beat Asia on the museum’s concept. “We believe the blending of art and science via the museum helps to educate them more about their skin and how they should take care of it.”

Another bold installation is the sculpture by Jos Curates called “She is Sanctuary,” which is designed to reimagine the female intimate area, paying homage to the body’s natural flora. It’s also built with an audio element, allowing it to speak and debunk common myths about intimate care.

“The art is intended to strike a chord and resonate with the woman. We want them to leave the museum feeling empowered, feeling as if their skin stories are heard,” Jamie added. “We try as much as possible for every art to represent as many skin stories as possible. Hopefully, they're inspired to talk about their skin needs and advocate for their own health.”

Lactacyd Enters a New Era of Skin Confidence

More than art, Lactacyd enters into the broader skincare category with the launch of its Body Wash collection, which includes Ever Fresh, for the active on-the-go lifestyles, and Healthy Bright, a radiance-boosting ritual for glowing skin.

The new body wash range features the brand’s improved formulation, LACTOBIOME+™, which helps restore your skin’s natural pH, and is designed specifically “to work in harmony with your body, nurturing the skin from within for naturally healthy skin.” This patented scientific innovation is also present across its feminine and baby care lines.

Lactacyd’s mother company, Opella, a French company focusing on consumer healthcare, is also known for its commitment to sustainability, having been a certified B Corp company. We spoke with Emma Valette, Country Head of Opella Philippines, to know more about how sustainability came into play for the new product line.

“Lactacyd is the flagship brand for Opella in leading the transformation on sustainability,” she said. “The first thing we did was move the packaging, so instead of the usual plastic recyclable, we went for recycled plastic. It’s already plastic that was used once, which we are taking, transforming, and making into a bottle again. And that can be infinite! It’s recycled and recyclable. Second thing, we went for organic and sustainably-sourced materials and looked for suppliers in Asia. We don’t fly ingredients from other places. We try to keep things local.”

“We also make sure the brand has a better footprint on the environment, and all of that has been recognized, and that’s really a commitment that we want to keep for the future and keep improving,” she added.

Price-wise, Lactacyd does fall under the semi-premium range, but we would say it’s still pretty affordable. Both variants of the body wash are priced at P399 for 500ml, and a single pump is already very lathering for your skin. The products were made available at the shop at the back of the museum for 20% off, in partnership with Watsons.

“We believe feminine health and total body wash is a part of your skincare routine, and if it’s science-backed, then definitely the value for money is there. With our history, it’s worth it!” Jamie expressed.

Lactacyd has always put the woman at the core of everything they do, and with this new product range, they are giving their customers’ personal care routine an upgrade. Their science speaks for itself, but it’s also their commitment to addressing women’s skin wants and needs, which can be seen from the different variants of their feminine wash categorymaking sure there’s a product made for you, which makes them a trusted and relied-upon feminine care brand of Filipinos for over 78 years.

Lactacyd’s ambition is to become a total skin health brand,” shared Jamie on the brand’s future plans. “We definitely want to expand into the different personal care routines of a woman, and also for the mothers and their babies, and eventually for the whole family. But the core of our brand is still the woman, so anything a personal care woman might need, we will try our best to address.”

Last Sept. 5, James Dyson pulled up at the Dyson Demo Store in Berlin, where he revealed some exciting new products in never-before-seen formats. This includes the Dyson HushJet™ Purifier Compact, a new, very high flow yet very quiet, small-format purifier, engineered to deliver whole room purification.

Purifiers are great for improving sleep quality because a clean air environment regulates your sleep-wake cycle and improves breathing quality by reducing allergens and filtering out pollutants like dust and pet dander.

Dyson’s new HushJet™ Nozzle is the next evolution in Dyson’s iconic Air Multiplier™ technology, which silences the way the air exits through the exit nozzle, so you can be sure it won’t disrupt your sleep. Some compact purifiers on the market can be as loud as 60 dB, but this product remains low at 44 dB at full flow and just 24 dB in sleep mode.

Additionally, this new product is only a third of the size but can deliver 80% of the purification capacity of the Dyson Big+Quiet purifier, making it ideal for small spaces like bedrooms.

HIV 101: Recognizing Symptoms, Preventive Methods, and Where to Get Tested

20251908 Man Wearing Red Ribbon

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is no longer a death sentence — that’s a fact. While there was a lack of treatment options in the past, especially in the early days of the epidemic, people living with HIV can now lead long and even healthy lives with early detection and proper treatment. However, although HIV is more manageable now than before, the rising number of cases in the Philippines remains alarming, particularly as more young people are testing positive.

Among countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the Philippines has been reported to have the fastest-growing number of HIV cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2025 alone, around 252,800 Filipinos are estimated to be living with HIV. The number of new cases has surged from 4,400 in 2010 to 29,600 in 2024 — an alarming increase of approximately 550%, per WHO’s report.

It's true that HIV is now manageable, much like other chronic illnesses. Unlike in the past, it is no longer considered a life-threatening disease, unless left untreated. Unfortunately, due to persistent stigma, many people still refuse to get tested. That’s why proper knowledge and awareness are more important than ever.

In this article, we've compiled some common symptoms of HIV and listed testing centers across the country where you can get tested.

What Is HIV?

HIV primarily targets the body’s white blood cells, weakening the immune system. With the immune system targeted, the body is now more susceptible to life-threatening diseases like tuberculosis, hepatitis, skin infections, pneumonia, and — in some cases — cancer. If HIV is left untreated, it can eventually lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) over time, which is a more advanced stage of HIV, making the body more vulnerable to certain health conditions.

Contrary to hearsay and unfounded claims, HIV cannot be spread through shared utensils and food, kissing, or casual contact such as handshakes and hugging. It is, however, transmitted through specific bodily fluids like blood, breast milk, semen, rectal fluids, and vaginal fluids. This can occur through unprotected sexual contact (both anal and vaginal), sharing needles (especially for drug injections), or perinatal transmission during childbirth. Unfortunately, HIV can be passed from a mother to her baby. Additionally, while oral sex carries some risk, it is relatively lower compared to anal or vaginal sex.

Common Signs and Symptoms of HIV

The signs and symptoms of HIV vary depending on the person and the stage of infection, according to Mayo Clinic. Symptoms may appear within the first few months after a person is infected, though some remain unaware of their status until the virus has already progressed to a more advanced stage. Some may experience flu-like symptoms within two to four weeks of infection, while others may have no symptoms at all during this period. Symptoms can also appear so mild that one might not notice them or suspect them as signs of HIV. Symptoms include:

  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Rash
  • Night sweats
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Mouth sores
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Is There a Cure for HIV?

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for HIV. However, treatments like antiretroviral therapy (ART) have significantly reduced HIV-related mortality and can prevent the infection from progressing. Thanks to ART, HIV has become a manageable chronic condition, allowing those infected to lead long and healthy lives. This treatment works by lowering the amount of virus in the body (known as the viral load) to the point that it becomes undetectable by standard tests. At that stage, it is considered undetectable, which means the virus cannot be transmitted to others, while also helping those who are infected maintain their health. So yes, people living with HIV can still live normal, healthy lives.

Medicines like PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) are also used as preventive methods, though they work in different ways. PrEP is for individuals who do not have HIV but are at high risk of acquiring it. It is typically recommended for those who are sexually active, have a partner living with HIV, or regularly engage in sexual activities without using protection such as condoms. PEP, on the other hand, is taken after a possible recent exposure to HIV. It is recommended for those who may have been exposed to HIV through unprotected sex, shared needles, or in cases of sexual assault.

Apart from preventive methods and practicing safe sex, it is still crucial to know your HIV status so you can take the right steps. That way, you can not only reduce the impact of the virus on your own health but also help prevent its transmission to others.

Here’s Where You Can Get Tested for HIV

Social Hygiene Clinics and Private Health Care Providers

Access to HIV testing centers is crucial for early detection and treatment. While not all hospitals in the country perform HIV tests, there are plenty of hospitals and health facilities that offer HIV testing services both in Manila and in other regions across the Philippines. Some social hygiene clinics also offer free HIV testing services. In the National Capital Region (NCR), in particular, health facilities that offer HIV testing include:

  • Lung Center of the Philippines
  • Makati Medical Center
  • Manila Doctors Hospital
  • Philippine General Hospital
  • Quezon City General Hospital
  • Research Institute for Tropical Medicine
  • St. Luke's Medical Center
  • San Lazaro Hospital
  • The Medical City
  • East Avenue Medical Center
  • Klinika Bernardo
  • Mandaluyong City Social Hygiene Clinic
  • Muntinlupa Reproductive Health & Wellness Clinic
  • Taguig Social Hygiene Clinic & Drop-In Center

NGO Facilities

Besides social hygiene clinics, non-governmental organizations like LoveYourself and Sustained Health Initiatives of the Philippines (SHIP) also provide free HIV testing, with the latter offering both testing and treatment through SAIL Clinic in Makati City. LoveYourself, on the other hand, is a community-based HIV/AIDS and sexual health organization in the country, which provides free HIV testing, counseling, treatment, and life coaching. Walk-in visits are welcome, but booking appointments is recommended to ensure availability and reduce waiting time. LoveYourself hubs and clinics include:

  • ABE Community Center (Mexico, Pampanga)
  • AGAPE Community Center (Capas, Tarlac)
  • LoveYourself Anglo (Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City)

HIV Self-Test Kit

If you want to get tested discreetly for a variety of reasons, self-testing is an ideal option. However, be cautious of bogus and unreliable sellers, especially those found on some online marketplaces. To ensure accuracy and safety, it’s best to purchase HIV self-test kits from reputable sources.

Recommended sites include the HIV test kit Philippines and Pulse Clinic. Both provide certified and reliable testing kits along with guidance on how to use them properly. Always consult a healthcare professional if you receive a reactive result. Results will be available within 10 to 15 minutes.

Conrad Manila is taking self-care to a higher frequency, introducing the Philippines to ISUN Skincare for the very first time.

ISUN is now exclusively available at Conrad Spa Manila’s premier luxury spa. Crafted with gemstone-infused oils, wildcrafted botanicals, and a deep respect for indigenous communities and the planet, ISUN perfectly aligns with Conrad’s sustainability mission.

Indulge in a suite of spa treatments designed to nourish your whole being. Among the highlights of the new menu is Transcend, a 90-minute-deep relaxation massage that blends gemstone-charged oils with aromatherapy to align your energy and bring you into a soothing restorative calm.

Try their Elevate Facial, a 90-minute treatment that employs ancient gua sha techniques to lift, tone, and revitalize skin while enhancing inner and outer glow.

If you’re after pure bliss, the 30-minute Ormus Bath treatment lets you soak in a mineral-rich, aromatic bath ritual that grounds the senses and refreshes the spirit, perfect as a prelude or finale to any treatment.

Whether you're in the mood for a one-time treat or want to build your own personalized wellness journey, Conrad Manila’s new ISUN-powered spa menu is your go-to for feeling good inside and out.
