“The National MILO® Marathon: 50th Anniversary ‘The Golden Run’” celebrates five decades of grassroots sports development and Filipino running culture. “Yemaya” takes the stage June 13 to July 5, 2026, at The Black Box at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati City, presented by 9 Works Theatrical.
Based on Quiara Alegría Hudes’ work, the musical follows a young boy whose desire to move beyond his humble beginnings leads him on a journey from the countryside to the city and beyond. As his path unfolds, the story traces his evolution through ambition, displacement, and self-discovery.
Guided by the symbolic presence of Yemaya, a figure associated with ancestry and the sea, the narrative shifts into a more reflective and mythic space. The production explores themes of heritage, identity, motherhood, and fate, presenting a layered story that connects personal growth with collective memory.
The cast includes Tommy Alejandrino and Benedix Ramos alternating as Jesus/Mulo, alongside Sheena Belarmino and Ness Roque as Maya, with Bituin Escalante in the title role. Supporting cast members include Herbie Go, Sheenly Gener, Anthony Falcon, and Wenah Nagales.
Directed by Ed Lacson Jr., with music and sound design by Teresa Barrozo, the production combines theatrical storytelling with musical and visual elements designed to immerse audiences in its world.
