Another month to experience a rollercoaster of emotions has come! This August, Manila’s theater scene sees the 2023 restaging of “Tick, Tick... Boom!” and the rerun of “The Reconciliation Dinner,” among others. All these are expected to bring theater lovers in the city to tears – not only of sadness, but also of joy, laughter, and anger.

‘Coppelia’ – Aug. 4-6

Kicking off Ballet Philippines’ 54th season is “Coppelia,” an adaptation of the 1870 comic ballet. The story revolves around the heroine, Swanhilda, who uncovers the mystery behind Coppelia, a life-like doll created by mad scientist Coppelius. She eventually impersonates the enchanting doll to win the heart of Franz, a village youth whom she yearns. Trouble ensues afterwards, promising to keep its viewers thrilled and on their toes.

‘Tick, Tick... Boom!’ – Aug. 5, 12-13, 19-20, and 26-27

Nearly seven years after its 2016 show in the Philippines, “Tick, Tick... Boom!” is returning to the stage this August. Jef Flores and Tanya Manalang, who played the 2016 adaptation, will be reprising their roles as Jon and Susan, alternating with Khalil Ramos and Kayla Rivera. Meanwhile, Vien King and Reb Atadero will be alternating for the role of Michael.

The show follows the story of the main character Jon, an aspiring composer in his 30s who’s torn between chasing his dreams in the theater industry and settling in practicality. The title, “Tick, Tick... Boom!” signifies how his time is running out as he struggles with this dilemma. This slice-of-life drama is sure to get its audiences pondering, so don’t miss it!

‘The Reconciliation Dinner’ – Aug. 5-6, 12-13, and 19-20

After gaining rave reviews when it premiered in May this year, “The Reconciliation Dinner” comes back this August for one last time. The show tells the tale of two friends, Dina and Susan, who, after a rift caused by different political ideals during the May 2022 elections, attempt to repair their relationship with a reconciliation dinner. It will also show the elections’ aftermath for both Dina and Susan’s families, which can get its audiences rethinking their political stances.

‘Ibong Adarna’ – Aug. 19-20

The theatrical iteration of classic Filipino epic, “Ibong Adarna,” is returning this August at Aliw Theater. The award-winning production will be helmed by Ballet Manila’s Gerardo Francisco and feature live opera singers, a full orchestra, pop singers, and classical ballet. Ballet Manila returns with a smaller dance company (about 20 dancers), but the production promises to provide a spectacular show for its audiences.

‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ Aug. 19-20

Relive the thrill in Hogwarts with the “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert” at the Theater at Solaire! The most-anticipated stage will run for two days, with the film showing on a big screen while its scoring is played by a live symphony. The show will be conducted by Los Angeles-based composer John Jesensky and performed by The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, so get ready to feel the magic!
