Singapore Restaurant Imposes S$10 Surcharge for Screaming, Disruptive Children

Angie's Oyster Bar & Grill in Tan Boon Liat Building at Outram Road imposes a S$10 surcharge on the final bill of diners if their child is loud and disruptive to other diners, according to a report by Singaporean news site Mothership on Sept. 20.

The surcharge is not new, as per the report, although not everyone in Singapore met the policy with positivity. Mothership shared a screenshot of the restaurant's message to a reservation maker, where it said the establishment does not have any chairs for babies as it is "not a kids friendly restaurant."

It also made clear its "Screaming Children Surcharge" for noisy or uncontrolled children, which will “not be tolerated.”

Back in August, a reviewer left a negative review on the restaurant's TripAdvisor profile. Mentioning the surcharge, the reviewer said, "Angie's could have taken a more polite approach. Am pretty put off by the reply. Guess we won’t be heading back."

The restaurant thanked the reviewer for their feedback and explained it has received several complaints of kids running around the establishment unattended and disturbing other guests.

"Not only is this dangerous as servers are often moving around with hot food and sharp cutlery, but it is also disrespectful to other diners who may wish to dine in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere," Angie's said.

The restaurant added that it pains them to impose the surcharge as it was not their intent to diminish guests' experience.

“We seek parents' and caretakers' kind understanding to tend to their children as we aim to provide as many pleasant and memorable dining experiences for as many customers as possible."
