Five Places Where You Can Eat Good Food Around Tiong Bahru
Tiong Bahru perfectly captures Singapore’s gentrified old-world charm. New tenants with their trendy concepts have transformed this space into a hip neighbourhood frequented by the city’s younger crowd. This area is brimming with fashion boutiques, blocks of old-style government housing, and quaint shops offering everything from rare vinyl records to unique souvenir items. But if there is one area where Tiong Bahru can compete with other neighbourhoods, it is food. The Beat Asia selected five locations around Tiong Bahru where you can find good food. Check them out!
Ming's Prawn Noodle
Craving for crustaceans and seafood? Ming's Prawn Noodle serves bowlfuls of noodle soup made of fresh ingredients. Their bestseller is the pork ribs and prawn noodles that can be served either dry or in soup. They are also famous for pig’s tail, a tender mouthful rich in collagen.
Ming's Prawn Noodle is open on Tuesdays to Thursdays, and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 AM to 2 PM.
Skirt and Dirt
Do not get intimidated by Ting Bahru’s trendy-looking cafés as this place is also home to our beloved hawkers. One of these is Skirt and Dirt, which is known for their budget-friendly burgers and fries. Try the S&D Burger Meal for S$7.80 or the Fish Crisp With Tropical Salsa for the same price if you want the healthier version. You can also order side dishes like the signature Dirt Fries (S$4), Ah Ma Style Wings (S$1.60 per piece), and Onion Rings (S$3).
Tiong Bahru Lor Mee
Specializing in thick yellow noodles, Tiong Bahru Lor Mee promises to convert those who are not into anything starchy. The noodles swim in rich and savoury gravy, paired with fish cake and meat slices, and sprinkled with chili. It is the perfect cheap companion after a day of roaming around the neighbourhood!
Tiann’s
This café takes healthy eating seriously by “making everything from scratch with real ingredients.” After all, the idea behind Tiann’s sprung from the owners’ struggle with weight and health issues, as well as finding good food to eat. They have a keto-friendly meal composed of scrambled eggs and paleo toast for S$13, with add-on options for grilled sausage with tomato, granola pot, or avocado and goat’s feta.
Tiann’s is open Tuesdays through Sundays at 8 AM to 5 PM.
Tiong Bahru Bakery
Any food-related list about Tiong Bahru is never complete without a mention of Tiong Bahru Bakery. Bread and pastry lovers are spoilt for choice in this bakery that is famous for their crisp croissants with a sweet and buttery note. The bakery also has a bevy of beverages on offer, perfect for pairing with your choice of bread. They have branched out to different locations, but their original Tiong Bahru spot remains a favourite.
