MFA Boston's French Impressionist Treasures Arrive at National Gallery SG

11Photo by The National Gallery Singapore

In a country celebrated for its architectural ambition and culinary finesse, Singapore is now stepping into something far more poetic: brushstrokes. This fall through winter, the National Gallery Singapore invites visitors to step into the luminous world of French Impressionism with “Into the Modern: Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.”

Running from November 14, 2025 to March 1, 2026, the exhibition marks a historic moment for Southeast Asia, presenting over 100 masterpieces from the golden age of French art, many of which have never been displayed in the region before.

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionism was a radical departure from the rigid formalism of academic painting. Artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro sought to capture the fleeting effects of light, atmosphere, and movement.

Painting en plein air (outdoors), they embraced visible brushstrokes, vibrant color palettes, and everyday subjects, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Their work, once dismissed as unfinished or rebellious, would go on to redefine the trajectory of modern art.

This showcase brings together the movement’s most iconic names. Visitors will encounter Monet’s atmospheric landscapes, 17 in total, that chart his journey from realism to abstraction. Renoir’s Dance at Bougival offers a tender portrayal of intimacy and motion, while Degas’ ballet scenes capture ephemeral gestures with unmatched precision. Pissarro’s rural and urban vignettes provide a democratic view of everyday life, grounding the exhibition in the rhythms of the modern world.

Organized into seven thematic sections, the exhibition will explore the rise of modernity through the lens of light, movement, and urban transformation. As a fully immersive experience, the National Gallery Singapore has curated a dynamic program that includes curator-led tours, interactive workshops, and multimedia installations that bridge 19th-century Paris with contemporary Asian perspectives.

It’s a celebration of innovation, elegance, and the enduring power of the painted image, right where tradition meets the future.

Artist Spotlight: Danielle Tay on Art, Disney, and Singaporean Identity

Danielle Tay

For Singaporean visual artist Danielle Tay, art has always been about bringing a sense of wonder into the everyday. Known for her vibrant paintings, collages, and murals, she has a gift for transforming spaces into imaginative worlds filled with color, texture, and nature-inspired energy.

Having studied at LASALLE College of the Arts and later graduating with First Class Honors from London’s Slade School of Fine Art, Danielle has since built an impressive portfolio that spans gallery exhibitions, public art, and collaborations with brands like Meta, Starbucks, the Singapore Tourism Board, and, most recently, the Disney Cruise Line.

But amid these collaborations and impressive pieces of art, what makes her practice especially compelling is the way she remains rooted in her love for nature and her colorful personal world — a theme that continues to shape her creative journey. In an exclusive interview with The Beat Singapore, Danielle talked about why nature plays such a big role in her work, her exciting collaboration with Disney Cruise Line, and how she found ways to weave uniquely Singaporean elements into that project, creating a dialogue between the local and international audiences through her art.

Hi Danielle! You’ve explored different forms of art from a young age. Can you share a defining childhood memory that sparked your passion for creating?

I have very vivid memories of my childhood art teacher, where I attended art classes in his backyard. He was a senior gentleman, and his house was filled with many of his own oil paintings, making the space feel extraordinary. I was so young, but I was completely intrigued by the creative process — how a blank canvas or piece of paper could become a world of its own. It's a feeling that has never left me.

You’re known to blend painting and collaging. Was this combination something you discovered early on, or did it evolve?

This combination definitely evolved over time and was born from a moment of frustration. Toward the end of the first year of my Fine Art studies, I felt restricted by the traditional frame of a painting. I started experimenting with collage as a way to break free. It felt spontaneous and gave me the freedom to let the art spill beyond the canvas. The entire wall became my canvas, and I fell in love with how I could create something expansive that felt both structured and wonderfully chaotic.

Many of your pieces reflect nature. Can you tell us why it plays a big role in your art, and where that connection stems from?

I feel most at ease and at peace in nature. The city is often so loud and fast-paced that it can be challenging to hear your own thoughts. Nature, on the other hand, forces you to slow down. It’s like a much-needed pause. In that stillness, everything feels balanced and in a state of equilibrium, and that’s the feeling I'm constantly seeking to capture in my work.

It’s a reminder to be present and to appreciate the quieter moments.

You’ve recently worked with Disney Cruise Line. Can you tell us about how that opportunity came about?

Disney Cruise Line reached out last year, and I was very thrilled for this incredible and unexpected opportunity. Disney stories were such a big part of my childhood, and this collaboration is an absolute dream come true!

That sounds amazing! What was it like merging your own style with such an iconic Disney character, and how did you ensure the work remained uniquely “you”?

This journey of collaborating with Disney Cruise Line and various teams like Creative and Marketing has been eye-opening and exciting. I also felt a big responsibility in ensuring my artwork remained uniquely “me” while bringing to life and staying true to the essence of iconic characters like Mickey Mouse and friends.

Through two-way consultations with Disney Cruise Line, I was able to find a way to let my own voice shine through while paying tribute to the portrayed Disney characters. For instance, Mickey is ever-curious, optimistic, and resourceful, holding a guidebook and searching for likely places where a lion might be, while Goofy brings his signature humor and playfulness to the artwork by popping out of the bushes in a lion headpiece.

Disney artwork
Courtesy of Disney

Your work was translated into both large-scale murals and smaller merchandise items. Was it tricky to adapt your style to work for both?

The process was actually quite organic, with the core signature design of Mickey and friends with recognizable cityscape elements of Singapore as a foundation and guiding point.  From there, other aspects blossomed, and I expanded with more details, layering inspirations of Singapore’s floral and cultural influences.

For instance, the batik pattern on Mickey and Minnie’s clothing evolved into a more intricate design when it came to applications for merchandise. I created the pattern using some of my favorite “roadside” flowers we frequently see in Singapore, like bougainvillea, ixora, kopsia, and frangipani. I feel their vibrant colors contribute greatly to the landscape of Singapore, and I wanted to shine a spotlight on their beauty.

Headband

Tea Towel | Courtesy of Disney

Your Disney piece definitely celebrates the spirit of Singapore. What other local elements did you intentionally weave into the artwork?

I wove in a lot of different elements, but the most prominent is the beautiful flora of Singapore, which reflects our identity as a lush Garden City with a deep connection to the sea.

I also wanted to add subtle, humorous tributes to local favorites in the artwork that bring quiet joy, like the traditional and ubiquitous “Good Morning brand towel, coffee takeaway, and durians — a fruit many in Singapore enjoy. The captivating local legend of Sang Nila Utama and his discovery of our island also helped to shape the narrative of the artwork, embodying the spirit of Adventure.

How important is it for you that international audiences, like those aboard the Disney Adventure, see and appreciate Singapore’s visual culture?

Very important! I hope that anyone, whether they are Singaporeans or international audiences, can appreciate Singapore’s colorful heritage and recognize the unique visual flavor of Singapore through my work. Whether they are patterns in the batik or the local flora, these are ways for me to share Singapore’s culture on a global stage, and I hope it sparks a sense of curiosity and a deeper appreciation for our rich history and traditions.

What would you say is your most memorable moment from this experience?

One of the questions posed to me early on the journey was “What does Disney mean to you?

This immediately sparked memories of my first visit to Disneyland and experiencing the fireworks in front of the iconic castle. It was such a magical and unforgettable feeling. I actually got emotional recalling this memory, and it even prompted me to unearth a small collection of my memorabilia from the visit.

Having worked with major brands, how do you ensure your signature style remains consistent across varying projects?

For me, consistency isn't about repeating the same motif, but about maintaining the same authentic energy. My style is a reflection of my inner world, and I cultivate that consistency by intentionally staying connected to what feels true to me. Every project is a new conversation, but I always listen for the same voice — that unique sense of life and emotion that I express through my use of form and color. It’s a practice of trusting my intuition and ensuring that authenticity remains at the core of everything I create. That's how I make certain my signature style shines through every time, regardless of the client or medium.

What’s next for you? Are there any projects in the pipeline that you’re looking forward to?

I just had an exhibition with Studio Yono, an amazing art and design store located in New Bahru in Singapore, earlier this month. Currently, I’m working on a whimsical mural for an elementary school. It’s a fun and rewarding challenge to create something with children as the primary audience, and I can’t wait to see their reactions.

Singaporean Indie Artist Alicia DC on Crafting Her Experimental Sound

Alicia DC

Hot on the heels of her latest collaboration with Filipino instrumentalist Gabba, we caught up with up-and-coming singer and producer Alicia Diva Chandra — more popularly known by her stage name, Alicia DC.

The Singaporean artist began releasing music in 2022 and has since carved out a name for herself with her unique brand of “experimental pop.” True to the label, her discography defies neat categorization. Yet, whether through glitchy beats, lush arrangements, or delicate vocals, there’s something in her soundscape for everyone to enjoy.

But Alicia’s relationship with music stretches far beyond her recent releases. A lifelong student of the craft, she spent six years at the School of The Arts Singapore before pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Composition at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, where she graduated with Honors. This rigorous training shaped her versatility as an artist, giving her the ability to compose and arrange across multiple mediums, including for orchestra, ensemble groups, and electronic productions.

The Beat Singapore sat down with Alicia DC to dive deeper into her world, discuss her music, her creative process, and what lies ahead for one of Singapore’s most promising rising talents.

Hi Alicia! Can you tell us about your earliest memory of music — what made you fall in love with it?

My earliest memory of music was when I was listening to this song called “She Bangs” by Ricky Martin. I was probably two years old. My eyes were completely glued to the computer screen showing the music video for “She Bangs” while dancing in my seat to the song. When I was a small kid, I think generally I would become super attentive to the music present in any room. My ears would just focus on the music and cancel everything else out.

But I never really had the thought that “I truly fell in love with music” until I was playing percussion instruments in a chamber ensemble group with my classmates when I was 14 years old, and studying music at the School of the Arts Singapore. I loved playing the Chinese drums.

Which artists or genres have shaped your musical identity over the years?

When I first started out, I was influenced by classical music, like Hiatus Kaiyote and Jacob Collier, simply because I was trying so hard to stand out from the crowd. I was trying to make the most experimental music in the world of songwriting. This is evident in my 1st EP, “Maybe."

Loading...

After a while, I started listening to a bit of everything. I would listen to UMI, Tennyson, Fujii Kaze, JD Beck and Domi, Pinkpantheress, Alfa Mist, and classical music. And the crazy thing is, I don’t think listening to any of that influenced my writing for a while, because while producing my second EP, “LOVERGIRL,” I was trying to create a trap pop EP, which is far from what I was currently listening to.

During the time in which I created the singles “bodyclock,” “Circles,” “If Only I Could,” I was not listening to music at all. Due to personal reasons, I was too overwhelmed by listening to music on a daily basis. In fact, I could only listen to meditative music at that time.

Over the years, I think my musical identity has been shaped by my habit of listening to a huge variety of music genres. I think that’s what makes my music sound experimental to some extent, regardless of what genre it’s written in. However, these days I am being more intentional with my listening, and I think my future music projects will be influenced by my listening to Drum and Bass (DnB) and Electronic Dance Music (EDM).

You’ve always composed and produced your own music. Can you tell us about the first song you’ve ever written?

I wrote this song about there being “Two Types of People” in this world, which I never put out. It’s a song where I compare extroverts with introverts, outdoorsy people with homebodies, people who value face-to-face social interaction versus people who are glued to their phones.

The chord progression made the song sound like a Jason Mraz song. I also wrote it using a ukulele, which I taught myself to play at that time. I think I was around 14 [years old] or younger.

What’s your creative process like? Do you start with lyrics or melodies?

Most of the time, I start with lyrics first. I draw inspiration from my personal life, my family life, and, as a last resort, my imagination.

When I first started out as a songwriter, almost all my songs were developed from entries in my diary. I would try my best to keep the words from the diary entry the same, and build on top of it, musically. If one of the lines exceeded the length of a 4/4 bar, I would change the length of the bar to fit that line of text. That’s one of the ways in which my music becomes a bit “experimental.”

From all the songs you’ve written, were there any that were easier or more challenging to compose than the others?

I think “bodyclock” was the easiest song to compose. I woke up too early in the morning and couldn’t sleep, and I wrote the lyrics for that song in one sitting. I then recorded the demo in just 30 minutes.

The most challenging song to compose was my collaboration with Taiwanese artist June Pan. The song is called “You Up?” and while I enjoyed writing this song with her, in hindsight, it did not feel like me, and it felt a bit unnatural to write and sing in such a bright and tonal song.

Speaking of challenges, as a rising indie artist, what are some of the difficulties you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them?

Personally, my main challenge as an independent artist is maintaining a healthy mindset despite the fluctuation in stats, streams, and numbers — to have blind faith in myself even when I feel like no one is watching or listening to my music.

I was and still am my biggest enemy as an independent artist. When I first debuted, I had so many negative thought spirals every time I put a song out. I would constantly feel like I wasn’t enough, and I would feel very jealous of other artists’ success. I overcame these thoughts by shifting my focus from comparing myself to others to focusing 100% on myself and my own journey. It was not easy; it took me years to get to where I am mentally, but I was able to overcome these thoughts by picking myself up again and again after every spiral.

Another thing was I struggled to ask for help in the past, considering it a sign of inadequacy. I overcame this by slowly letting more people into my life, and trusting more people to help me with my work. I do think my music sounds a lot better now as a result.

What’s something that you want to achieve as an artist and producer?

I want to be able to have a distinct style of producing one day. I want to be recognized as a producer and be confident enough to produce for other artists one day.

Do you have any dream collaborations?

I’m not sure if my sound would work with theirs but Yves, Pinkpantheress, Jordan Ward, JD Beck, and Domi.

You’ve done some collaborative work in the past. Was there one you’d consider the most memorable or you’re particularly proud of?

I think I am proud of my most recent collaboration with Gabba for the song “Fall.” I think this song is the best song I have ever made in collaboration with another artist.

I also felt I felt like this collab was easier to do. Even though there were challenges, it felt more effortless, and it made more sense because our sounds do work well together.

So, what’s next for Alicia DC?

I will be putting out a new single towards the end of this year! It will be the beginning of an era that solidifies my aesthetic and sound as “ALICIA DC.”

Calling all “Star Wars” fans! The National Library Board (NLB) just opened Singapore’s first-ever pop-up library inspired by the beloved franchise at Changi AirportTerminal 3.

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations and in collaboration with Disney, with the support of Changi Airport Group, NLB is bringing stories from the faraway galaxy closer to home with a massive collection of over 2,000 “Star Wars” books, featuring 380 unique titles specially picked by NLB librarians.

The library is located on Level 2 near the Skytrain and linkbridge to Jewel, and will run until Jan. 24, 2026. So there’s plenty of time to check out every single title available there from the “Star Wars: Darth Vader” comic series, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian: The Manga” series, “Star Wars: The High Republic” junior novel series, the “Thrawn: Ascendancy” trilogy novels, and more!

“We have been encouraged by the response to our pop-up libraries over the past two years, which have brought reading and learning closer to where our patrons are,” said NLB’s Chief Executive Officer, Ng Cher Pong. “We are happy to collaborate with Disney and are grateful for Changi Airport Group’s support in opening this Star Wars-themed library as part of our NLB30 celebrations. It is a fun way for everyone to learn more about one of the world’s most fabled universe, and to discover the joys of reading.

This pop-up library opening is part of NLB’s ongoing efforts to bring experience and resources beyond its premises through Nodes, advancing NLB’s LAB25 vision of building a vibrant Learning Marketplace. The “Star Wars” pop-up library will not only feature both physical and digital books but also interactive activities that aim to engage its visitors.

Try out various interactive zones like a personality quiz that tells you which Jedi you resemble the most and a trivia challenge that will put your "Star Wars" knowledge to the test. The venue also boasts digital screens showing iconic backdrops from the franchise, making the perfect photo spots!

Since it’s a library with stories from space, NLB has assigned robotic arm librarians that zip around retrieving and shelving books. This automated book retrieval system also allows visitors to select titles through a touch-screen kiosk and the robotic arm would locate and transport the selected items to the collection point for easy pickup. As with all NLB loans, these books can also be returned to any NLB library island-wide.

What started as a bold idea by a then-19-year-old entrepreneur is now Southeast Asia’s biggest and only Bollywood-centricmusic festival.

Suntamed Music Festival returns to Sentosa’s Siloso Beach on Sentosa Island on Aug. 23, 2025 for its third year, and it’s gearing up to be a full-blown cultural takeover.

Created by Founder Samrudhi Ekhande and powered by De Ideaz, the all-day event is a high-octane celebration of identity, where Desi beats meet global bass, bringing a coterie of names and the larger community together.

“This isn’t just about sound,” says Samrudhi. “It’s about providing a Premium Desi Musical experience, which also helps break away from some of the negative stereotypes that are associated with Indian nightlife.
