Authorities Seize Suspected Smuggled Goods Worth HK$10 Million
The Hong Kong Customs and Marine Police detected a speedboat-related smuggling case in Sai Kung in a joint anti-smuggling operation on Dec. 21.
Law enforcement officers witnessed several men loading suspected smuggled goods from a private car to a speedboat at a seashore in Tai Mong Tsai Tuesday evening.
According to a government press release on Dec. 22, the men fled on the speedboat when the police took action, although the latter was able to detain the private car, where they discovered a batch of suspected smuggled goods comprising electronic goods, cosmetics, apparel, and more.
The authorities have since seized the smuggled goods, which amounted to an estimated value of HK$10 million. An investigation is underway.
Smuggling is considered a serious offence in Hong Kong and carries a maximum fine of HK$2 million and a seven-year imprisonment for those found guilty of importing and exporting smuggled goods.
