HKIA Drops Out of 10 Best Airports For the First Time

The ranking of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), the city’s main landing strip, has dropped to 20th place this year, even lower than Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

In the latest report by international air transport rating organization Skytrax, HKIA fell out of the top 10 for the first time, lagging behind other airports in East Asia such as Chubu Centrair International Airport in Nagoya, Kansai International Airport in Osaka, and Seoul Incheon Airport in South Korea.

HKIA has been awarded “Airport of the Year” for many years but has recently lost its competitiveness in the aviation sector due to the city’s COVID-19-related inbound flight restrictions and strict passenger quarantine measures.

The top three airports this year are the same as last year, namely Hamad International Airport in Doha, Haneda International Airport in Japan, and Changi Airport in Singapore.

Criteria for the rating include queuing time at arrival, passenger terminal comfort, waiting time at security check, attitude of airport staff, and shopping and dining options available.
