Health Authorities Remind Public on Cold Weather Safety As Temperature Drops

Hong Kong residents are reminded to take precautionary measures amid the cold weather that may affect the elderly and people with chronic illnesses, according to a press release from the Centre of Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) on Dec. 27.

A CHP spokesman mentioned that individuals with heart diseases, respiratory illness, or chronic conditions are the most vulnerable when exposed to cold temperature.

"Elderly people have less insulating fat beneath their skin to keep them warm and their body temperature control mechanism may be weaker. Their body may not be able to appropriately respond to the cold weather," the spokesman said.

To ensure safety, here are some cold weather reminders from the CHP:

1. Stay updated with weather reports.

2. Limit outside exposure. Wear warm clothing like a sweater, scarf, knit mask (for face and mouth cover), gloves, etc.

3. Assess your nutritional needs and avoid excessive calorie intake.

4. Stay at a well-ventilated and comfortable room temperature.

5. Always wash hands before touching and consuming foods to avoid food-borne diseases that are common in cold weather.

6. As much as possible, avoid using charcoal when cooking in poorly ventilated areas due to possible carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

7. Seek immediate medical care, if necessary. Look for emergency warning signs.
