Hong Kong’s Crime Rate Rises 4.4% in 2022 Compared to 2021
Hong Kong registered an increase of 4.4% or 2,087 in crime cases in the first three quarters of 2022 when compared to the same period last year, a government news portal reported yesterday.
A total of 49,927 cases were recorded from January to September 2022, as compared with 47, 840 cases in 2021, with a rise of over 5,000 deception cases reported in leading the city-wide increase. The number of deception cases rose 39.7% to 19,444 cases.
The government also noted decreases in robberies, burglaries, rape, wounding and serious assault, and pickpocketing, as well as violent crime (10% decrease to 6,465).
Through September 2022, the police arrested a total of 210 people in accordance with the National Security Law, with more than half of those arrested charged.
