History Made: Siobhan Haughey Wins Hong Kong’s Third Medal at Tokyo Olympics

After giving Hong Kong its second podium finish at the Tokyo Olympics, swimmer Siobhan Haughey clinched another silver medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle.

The 23-year-old athlete finished at 52:27, behind Australian Emma McKeon’s fresh Olympic record of 51:96. Cate Campbell, another delegate from Australia, clocked 52:52 to win the bronze medal.

Haughey, who was born and raised in Hong Kong, also took home the silver medal in the women’s 200-meter freestyle on July 28 to give Hong Kong its first Olympic podium finish from a swimming event.

Hong Kong’s medal haul now includes two silvers and one gold, the first time in history that the former British colony is bringing home more than one Olympic medal.

Early this week, fencer Cheung Ka Long defeated defending champion Daniele Garozzo from Italy to clinch the city’s first Olympic gold medal in more than two decades.
