Hong Kong Sees Record 4,285 New COVID-19 Cases; Youngest Virus-Linked Fatality Logged

Hong Kong recorded 4,285 new cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 16, marking the city’s highest daily tally since the onset of the pandemic.

The latest tally consists of 21 imported cases and 4,264 locally acquired cases, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) announced yesterday. This brings the overall number of COVID-19 cases in the city to 30,955 since the start of the pandemic. In the past 14 days alone, Hong Kong recorded 12,344 cases, including 12,250 locally acquired cases and 94 imported.

Meanwhile, there were nine fatalities related to COVID-19 between Feb. 16 and 17, including a three-year-old girl and a century-old woman. The death of the girl, Hong Kong’s youngest casualty due to the virus, was linked to acute brain inflammation, while that of the 100-year-old woman was related to chronic illness, according to multiple media outlets.
