Mainlanders Allowed to Visit Hong Kong Quarantine-Free Starting Sep. 15, 2021

Hong Kong will allow mainlanders and residents of Macau to come to Hong Kong without undergoing a 14/21-day quarantine in a hotel, starting September 15 2021.

The “Come2hk” quarantine-free scheme will cover non-residents of Hong Kong travelling to the city for business or tourism. The scheme was scheduled to be rolled out late May 2021, but was shelved after an explosion of COVID-19 cases in China across several provinces.

In a daily press conference on COVID-19 and local issues in the city, Chief Executive Carrie Lam noted that a maximum of 2000 non-Hong Kong residents from China and Macao will be allowed to enter the city each day. She stated that the regions’ pandemic situation has stabilized after outbreaks in respective countries.

"A 1,000-person quota will be available daily at [both] the Shenzhen Bay Port and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Port," she said to reporters at her weekly press conference on Sep. 7, 2021.

Hong Kong’s similar “Return2HK” scheme will begin letting SAR residents from Macau and non-at-risk areas of China to return to the city quarantine-free, will begin again starting September 8.

"We have been talking about this [Come2HK scheme] for a long time but were never able to launch it, as there were often problems, either because of the rebound in cases in Hong Kong, or the mainland's pandemic situation."

"Since the Return2HK scheme was implemented in November, more than 200,000 Hong Kong people have come back, and there wasn't one single confirmed infection, so we can be reassured," the Chief Executive said.

Lam added that those arriving under the two schemes must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result at either the Shenzhen or Macau Bridge Port upon arrival, and will be tested regularly after.
