No matter if you’re switching to plant-based cheese thanks to a vegan diet, lactose intolerance, or simply out of curiosity, these shops have got you covered. Will it melt, stretch, or crumble? That might depend on which type of dairy-free cheese you reach for, but what’s guaranteed is an ingredients list void of animal products.

Garden Hill

The passionately created brainchild of Jan Yeung, ex-development chef for the now-shuttered plant-based mainstays Grassroots Pantry and Nectar, Garden Hill is a project that has been informed with multifaceted influences from Hong Kong’s culinary scene. In fact, the bean curd that is used to create the brand’s products are sourced from local producers, lending to a smoother and authentic cheesy texture that at once tastes delicious and pays homage to unique local ingredients.

Choose from Feta Cheese (HK$80), Aged Sharp Cheese (HK$95), or meltable Pepper Jack (HK$80) and Mozzarella (HK$80), all of which are made fresh in Wong Chuk Hang. Expanding their range to also include spreads, baked goodies, and sauces, you surely won’t be missing out on any of your favourite condiments or treats.

La Taula

A crèmerie that dabbles in the joys of playing with their food, La Taula stocks vegan cheeses that runs wild with all sorts of new-fangled flavourings. From peppercorn-spiked Szechuan Chilli Cheese (HK$250) to umami-laden Miso Cheese (HK$250), to the seasonal Black Garlic Limited Edition (HK$250) cheese, there are so many untapped tastes to explore. The label was founded by raw plant-based chef Kanch Porta Panjabi, who studied under a celebrity chef training programme by Matthew Kenney Culinary.

Wrapped in biodegradable paper and presented in reusable ceramic dishes that can be returned for future discounts on orders, the products feature sustainable packaging to adhere to zero-waste principles. Check out their range of cracker thins and sweet vegan snacks too for a contrasting balance of savoury and sweet to go with your cheese.

Nuteese

Turning to the lesser-tapped potential of nuts, Nuteese is a locally based business crafting handmade raw vegan cheeses using fermented and cultured cashews, almonds, and macadamias. Working from her plant-based food-lab to concoct nut-based cheeses that don’t compromise on flavour or mouthfeel, Nuteese founder Amy Elkhoury draws upon her experiences studying under Matthew Kenney and her passion in exploring nutrition that’s free from animal products. From the mild and sliceable Nuts for Mozz (HK$105), to the piquant depths of Somerset Noble (HK$138), the versatility of their star ingredient shouldn’t be underestimated!

Established by chef Tina Barrat, the mind behind Ma… and the Seeds of Life restaurant, Le Fromage is a foray into gourmet vegan deli goods. Turning to cashew and almond that are treated and fermented to mimic the flavours of our favourite dairy product, the raw vegan cheeses put out by Le Fromage are all artisanal works bursting with full and relishing palates. Each cheese also comes with a recommended wine pairing, giving you something to swig no matter if you are enjoying a bit of Raw-Bichon (HK$150) on one of the shop’s slices of keto bread (starting HK$78), or nibbling on a charcuterie plate of Sharp Cheddar (HK$150) and Shamembert (HK$160).
