Starting on Jan. 5, 35 teams will be competing for sailing championships at the 2023 MGM Macau International Regatta. The event, organised by several sporting branches of the Macau government and title-sponsored by MGM Macau, will fill the city shoreline with professional sailors and catamarans.

The participants are divided into three groups: Macao Cup International Regatta (Beneteau First 40.7 unified design group), Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta (IRC group), and the International Catamaran Invitational (Hobie 16 unified design group), the Macao News reported. Each category will have 11, 9, and 15 competing teams respectively.

A fleet parade will take place on Jan. 5 and 8 at 9 AM, where Macau residents, visitors and casual fans can get a glimpse of the competitors up close. According to the press release by the sports bureau: “The participating vessels will set sail from Macau Fisherman's Wharf, pass through Macao Science Center, Kun Iam Ecumenical Center and Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, and return at Macao Tower.”

There will also be family-oriented booths in the event area, where kids can participate in marine-related games that include floor curling and a mini-yacht race on an actual pool. For those near or are staying at the MGM Macau, a live demonstration of how a sporting catamaran works will be on display at the Grande Praça area.
