A High Speed Railway Between Macau and China is Being Studied

Neighbouring Chinese city to Macau, Hengqin is tasking their urban planning authority for tenders to evaluate the feasibility of linking mainland China’s high-speed railway network to Macau, according to a report from Macau Business.

The study, costing around MOP6 million, aims to evaluate the integration of China’s railway network with Macau's Light Rapid Transit system. If the railway linking Macau is approved, it will provide a vital transportation link between the SAR and Guangzhou's international airport, as well as several other stops along the route.

The proposed Hengqin-Macau railway will cover seven to nine kilometres and is estimated to cost approximately MOP6 billion. Macau’s LRT connection with Hengqin is expected to be completed by September 2024.

Beyond Macau, the Greater Bay Area will witness significant investment in its regular rail network, with a projected 4,700 kilometers of track already in use or under construction by 2025.
