Can You Solve This Mystery in Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza Ortigas, Manila?

Crowne Plaza Ortigas’ 262 rooms and Holiday Inn Ortigas’ 285 rooms are all newly-renovated – so why not host a Murder Mystery event to show them off? In a one-of-a-kind event, the two iconic hotels in the business district partnered with Mystery Manila to host a “Murder Mystery” night for the press and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs).
We were gathered in Holiday Inn’s newly opened Summit Lounge. Located on the 29th floor, access to the exclusive lounge includes complimentary refreshments, afternoon Twinings tea and coffee, evening cocktails, and breakfast. While enjoying your drink, you can take in the stunning view – buildings and streets of Pasig City and Quezon City with green pockets dotted here and there.

Then it was game time. Mystery Manila held a quick briefing on what was about to happen – a “murder” had taken place, and we must solve it. Split into three groups, the two groups were led to their Holiday Inn suites while the remaining group went over to Crowne Plaza. Everybody was abuzz as equal parts tension and excitement filled the air – we all received a little, cryptic box that served as the event’s invitation, setting the mood even before we had arrived.
On our way to the suites, we were greeted by refreshing, robin-blue hallways. As most of us were familiar with the previous aesthetic of the 30-year-old Holiday Inn Manila Galleria hotel, it was certainly a 180-degree transformation – one that highlighted the vibrant direction of these two IHG hotels. Expectations were high and upon entering our two-bedroom suite, we were not disappointed. Our group momentarily forgot the mystery that was supposed to take place and beelined for the brand-new furniture – stopping ourselves from exploring the bedrooms as the game moderators started to acquaint us with the mechanics.

Several characters were laid out in front of us, and we were tasked to pick – and embody – one. As we were familiar with “Murder Mystery” games, we knew all too well the shift in energy as people read their characters’ back stories, objectives, and relationships with the rest of the people in the room. Still, this was not game night with friends and so understandably, it took quite some time for our group to relax and fully embrace the stories we had inadvertently chosen for ourselves.
Once the ice was broken, however, each person shone in their own way – creating storylines beyond their character sheets, negotiating secret deals, accusations flying everywhere, and quiet meetings. All before the “murder” even happened and once it did, everyone leveled up. We experienced every nook and cranny of the new suite as we searched for clues that could pinpoint who committed the crime. While it was tempting to take a quick cat nap in the soft bed or perhaps take a dip in the corner tub, it was also thrilling to find pieces of evidence hiding behind curtains and inside drawers. It was, we confess (pun intended), nearly impossible to focus on the game and ignore the luxurious features of the room.

But then we were called to solve a mystery and we had to come up with a suspect fast. It was every person for themselves as we all grilled each other on our motives, passed blame, and announced our suspicions – all in the name of friendly competition and good-natured fun, of course.
By the end of the game, we had evolved from a group of strangers to a group of friends, exchanging Instagram accounts and contact details. That, of course, is the goal of mystery events – despite whatever chaos may have ensued during the game.
More importantly, no corner of the room was ignored, and we all got to experience the newly-renovated Holiday Inn Manila Galleria suite rather than just seeing it from the press release. The mastermind behind the event was Jayvie Dizon, Cluster Director of Marketing and Communications for both Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Ortigas, and Cluster General Manager Pat Puyat.
“These two iconic hotels have been around for 20 years for Crowne Plaza and 30 years for Holiday Inn. So people’s perception, top of their mind – old. That’s it, period,” Jayvie revealed, adding that this partnership with Mystery Manila came about because they wanted a more unique way to share with their guests the revamping that the two hotels underwent. Something fun and exciting, rather than a standard media kit – to reflect the vibrant vibe of their brand-new rooms.

But it didn’t happen overnight. The renovation of their 547-key hotels started during the pandemic and was finally completed in March 2024. It was all worth it, however, as the “complete facelift” – which involved changing the carpet, bedding, and furniture according to Jayvie – breathed new life into the two hotels. He also added that other parts of the hotels will also be upgraded, but this is something guests will have to watch out for in the future.
One thing guests can look forward to is the two-level penthouse suite, the only one of its kind in Metro Manila. With living and dining spaces plus two bedrooms, each with en suite bathrooms, it is perfect for families and groups. Each room in Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza is guaranteed to be spacious, even the standard rooms, keeping their guests’ comfort in mind.

Beyond their rooms, guests can also stay fit and join fitness classes in their 24-hour gym, lounge and swim in the outdoor pool from 6 AM to 8 PM, and get a massage in their in-house spa. Both hotels also offer multiple dining and drinking options – Seven Corners, Xin Tian Di, and The Gallery Bar. For breakfast, you can take your pick in the buffet at the Fab Restaurant. All in all, you’ll have everything you need for a wonderful staycation or work-cation.
