With the new “Superman” movie tugging on heartstrings and sparking a huge surge in adoptions (thanks, Krypto!), more people are inspired to find their furry sidekick. Animal adoption may just be one of the most rewarding decisions one could ever make, as it offers a lifetime of joy and companionship while also creating a huge impact by giving a second chance to a beautiful soul in need. 

If you’ve been thinking about growing your family or opening your heart and home to a four-legged canine or feline, we’ve rounded up some of the adoption hubs and animal shelters in the metro where you can find your future pet — and maybe even your very own hero in disguise. 

Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)

According to their website, PAWS is a non-profit organization (NGO) dedicated to the protection and promotion of humane treatment of all animals. The organization has been actively pushing for better laws to ensure animals are protected and well-treated through various campaigns that educate Filipinos on responsible pet ownership and programs designed to end pet homelessness, such as low-cost spay and neuter surgeries at their animal rehabilitation center (PARC) and the “Fetch and Fix” program, which helps homeless people get their pets neutered. Additionally, they accept volunteers and donations in cash and in-kind to help fund their activities. 

Most of their rescued dogs and cats have lived a difficult life before being rescued, so PAWS has to make sure that they’ll be adopted by loving humans who will give them a forever, caring home. The adoption process will include an application and interview before you’re able to meet the animals at the shelter. All the animals are neutered/spayed and vaccinated. There is also an adoption fee of P500 for cats and P1,000 for dogs.

CARA Welfare Philippines

CARA was formed in 2000 by a group of animal lovers whose purpose is to help the plight of animals in the country. They aren’t an animal shelter and don’t receive government funding, and are mainly a non-profit advocacy sustained by donations and volunteers. 

However, they do house some dogs and cats in their facility in Mandaluyong City who are currently looking for forever homes. CARA gives you the option to adopt or sponsor one of their pets. 

To adopt, simply check out their pets for adoption on their website and Facebook page or visit the CARA Animal Welfare Facility to meet them. The organization requires that you prepare photos and videos of your house and a filled-out adoption form, which is available on their website or on site. 

Once they have gone through your application, there will be a screening process. And once approved, you’ll only need to pay the adoption fee of P1,000 for cats and P1,500 for dogs, before you can take them home.

Pawssion Project Foundation

Founded by Malou Perez in 2018, this NGO is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of abused, abandoned, and neglected animals. The project began in Bacolod, which has since expanded to a second shelter in Bulacan in 2019. The organization has been reported to have rescued more than 2,000 animals and rehomed over 1,000.

The organization is sustained through donations in cash and in-kind, and maintained by volunteers as well as sponsors for the animals they’re currently taking care of. But the best way to help is to give one of their adorable rescues a home. 

Their adoption process is simple and composed of three steps: application, interview, and visitation. There is an adoption fee of P1,000 for both dogs and cats, and you can view their available rescues for rehoming and the application form on their website.

Animal Kingdom Foundation

AFK is another non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare and is mostly known for the rescue and adoption of local Aspin and Puspin breeds. 

The organization was founded in 2002 by Charles Leslie Wartenberg, who, after discovering the cruel dog meat trade in the provinces, decided to intercept and save the helpless dogs from slaughter. Their rehabilitation center is located in Capas, Tarlac, but they often organize and participate in events in Manila, such as Pet Summits and the Mars Global Adoption Weekend, to bolster adoptions in the capital.

To bring home one of their rescues, you’ll need to visit the adoption platform WeR4HappyTrails to view the animals in their center. Just fill up the form and wait for it to be processed and evaluated.

Hound Haven

Founded in 2015, Hound Haven PH is the country’s first rehabilitation center for retired Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Contract Working Dogs (CWDs). This organization aims to find forever homes for these hardworking canines and help them transition into their new lives. 

Their adoption process is thoughtful and structured due to the specialized nature of the dogs. You’ll need to fill up an application form, attend a virtual interview, which will be followed by an in-person screening. If approved, you can begin the one-month fostering period. Afterwards, your fostering experience will be evaluated before you can finalize adoption. The adoption fee is currently at P7,500.
