How Climate Change Can Affect Our Skin

Climate change can also affect our skin and lead to conditions such as severe acne and skin cancer. Check out our story to know how you can protect your skin.

How Climate Change Can Affect Our Skin

As the skin is exposed to different types of environments, it is susceptible to increased heat and humidity. Individuals who are at risk the most include:

  • Elderly
  • Infants and children
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic medical conditions such as renal disease
  • Outdoor workers
  • The socially disadvantaged

What skin conditions can we develop due to climate change?

The condition of our skin is based on multiple factors. Aside from hormones, genetics, diet, or lifestyle, where we are located can also affect our skin conditions. Tropical locations are mostly exposed to high heat and humidity, while those who are living in continental regions are exposed to cold weather.

Nowadays, we can feel the changes in our climate and experience extremely hot or cold weather. So, what does this mean for our skin?

Severe Acne

The persistent rise in temperature can result in the clogging of your hair follicles, triggering acne. Our sebaceous glands and sweat glands are sensitive to heat and being exposed to certain temperatures can cause them to quickly generate their secretions.

Photoaging

Signs of photoaged skin include dryness, accentuated skin furrows, deep wrinkles, mottled pigmentation, and loss of elasticity.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC)

Exposure to solar UVR is the most common cause of NMSCs. Per data, every 1% loss of total ozone can lead to a 3% to 5% chance of skin cancer.

Malignant Melanoma

The patterns of the sun are constantly changing, and it is believed to be the major factor in the rising cases of melanoma especially in countries such as the United States.

How to protect our skin?

It’s always a good practice to observe and be mindful of your well-being. If you find yourself dealing with skin conditions that can be caused by the environment, take preventative measures to alleviate any irritation or more serious issues.

Sunscreen

Since many skin conditions are caused by sun damage, the appropriate use of sunscreen that is at least SPF 15 is highly recommended, especially if you can’t prevent exposure to the sun. At work or on the beach, sunscreens are a must-have to avoid hyperpigmentation or skin cancer.

Hydration

Skin hydration is necessary to cope with the weather, especially as it gets drier. Add hydrating oil or serum into your daily routine to help with skin dryness and use hydrating mask or cleansers.

Consult a Professional

Check with your doctor if you are noticing any changes in your skin, or discomfort. They will be able to refer you to a dermatologist where you can discuss solutions or skincare plans.

Taking small steps can make a huge difference, especially if it involves our health. Global warming is a significant issue and its consequences—either to the environment or to our health—are massive. Awareness and understanding are a few solutions to amend the damage caused by this phenomenon and it will be helpful to be conscious of our actions, to protect not only ourselves but also the environment that we live in.
