Once they’re solid, pop them out and wrap them in small paper bags or repurposed jars.

Residents from the north of Metro Manila might have just given a sign of relief after this one.

IKEA is opening its first Plan and Order Shop in the Philippines at TriNoma Mall this October 23, 2025, bringing affordable and sustainable design closer to northern Metro Manila residents and to provinces outside the metro.

The new store features room vignettes, products for purchase, and serves as a free Collection Point for online orders. It also offers one-on-one design consultations to help customers plan their dream kitchens, wardrobes, and storage cabinets with the same expert guidance found at IKEA Pasay.

The IKEA Plan and Order Shop aims to make affordable home furnishings even more accessible to shoppers from every corner of Metro Manila, one neighborhood at a time.

Say hello to a new wave in kitchen design: the most dramatically curved kitchen the Philippine market has ever seen, set to revolutionize the interior design of local homes.

Italian luxury kitchen brand Pedini, known for creating innovative modular designs since 1957, is collaborating with Moda Interni and bringing its signature curved kitchen concept to local shores.

Their latest creation challenges the conventions of flat, linear spaces and invites homeowners into a more fluid experience, with an Italian touch.

This sculptural space gently wraps around its users, offering ergonomics, ease, and elegance in every detail. Central to the design is a breathtaking C-shaped island framed by lacquered, slatted cabinetry and organic wood accents.

“With Pedini’s curved kitchens, we’re not just offering a luxury product. We’re introducing a new standard for how the modern Filipino kitchen can feel and function,” Goldwin Sison shared.

The layout remains gracefully curved, while elements like cooktops, sinks, and shelving can be customized to match your rhythm and style.

Catriona Gray’s New Furniture Collection Showcases Local Artistry

While best known as a former Miss Universe, Catriona Gray is, in fact, also a designer at heart. In fact, the model and personality designed her own jewellery for the Miss Universe competition in 2017. This included the now iconic ear cuff she wore that featured sun rays and three stars, which was executed by jewellery brand Tessera. Today, she challenges her design skills to a whole new level, collaborating with local furniture brand Genteelhome to create a caspule collection inspired by local culture.

Called the Payak Collection, Catriona Gray and Genteelhome Founder Katrina Blanca de Leon unveils a versatile line of furniture pieces that can be used both inside and outside the house. Handmade by Kapampangan artisans, with hand-woven accent pieces made by local weavers, each piece was meticulously designed and curated by none other than Catriona herself. Boasting of tables, accent chairs, and even a bookshelf, the Payak Collection embodies Catriona’s love for local and a minimalist lifestyle that is functional and beautiful.

Catriona, what is your design philosophy and how can it be seen in the Payak Collection?

Catriona Gray: I live in a condominium, so the pieces I own can’t just be beautiful; they also have to be very functional. And you see that intention carried out in the pieces [like the Balik Tanaw side table, which is both a side table and a picture frame].

Everything in the collection is also highly customizable, and you can see my love of tradition and culture being funnelled down in an artistic and design aspect [through the materials used]. Of course, you can also see my personality in it, like how there are pops of color in the Kapit Bisig shelf. For me, that pop of color is personality because interjecting those little unexpected details in your space can help reflect who that person is.

Lastly, one of my biggest advocacies is to empower women, and you can see that in the collection through the way we’ve incorporated weaves into the design. Traditionally, it is the women who pass down these cultures and art styles, and that in itself is a nod towards such incredible women.

Katrina, what was it like bringing Catriona’s vision to life for Payak?

Katrina Blanca de Leon: It felt like sharing a piece of [Catriona’s] heart and translating that unto pieces of art or furniture. She made sure to incorporate a lot of her memories into each design, and sketching her was so fun because we felt like we were in that moment or memory alongside her.

Our conversation flowed easily because Catriona is very immersed in all the colors and elements. She’d explain why she wanted a certain color, and we got to understand and visualize how each piece would come together. For Payak, it wasn’t just about having a beautiful piece in your home, but also having something that has meaning.

What makes a Filipino product or furniture different?

Katrina: It’s really the way our craftsmen create. Not everything is machine crafted [we also rely on the artistry of our people]. And we believe that when you pour your heart into something, it is seen in the details; and when you mix handcrafted furniture with modern, machine-made pieces, you see a space truly come to life.

How do you incorporate mindfulness and authenticity in the spaces you create?

Catriona: I think it's really in my love for supporting local, and I think that's also why this partnership with Genteelhome took on the life that it did, because we both share the same passion for elevating Filipino craftsmanship.

I even had the opportunity to visit one of the warehouses and see the pieces being made. It was wonderful to see the people being impacted by the livelihood that these pieces allow them to have. It gives you a sense of pride [to see how it’s locally made]. Other countries are known for creating such gorgeous furniture, but we also have a distinct flair that I think can be appreciated no matter who is looking at it from wherever in the world they may come from.

I also incorporate mindfulness into my space because I'm very practical because with my space. As I mentioned, I live in a condo so I have to maximize what I have. The pieces that I have are all comfortable, practical, and beautiful at the same time.

What is your most used piece from the Payak collection?

Catriona: Maybe it’s the accent chairs because I like to read a lot. But even when I review contracts or decompress at the end of the day or make quiet time for myself in the morning, I’ll be sitting on my accent chair. I also have a lot of bookshelves at home, so the Kapit Bisig bookshelf is special to me. Whenever I travel, I love to collect anik-anik (trinkets), and I have them all on display.

What emotions or experiences do you hope people to take away from the Payak collection?

Catriona: I want people to feel proud that they have a piece like this in their home, because it's not just beautiful, it has intention behind it, and it’s made so expertly by Filipino artisans. I also want people to feel comfort because a home for anyone should feel like an escape from the hustle and bustle of the world. Catriona: Yes, I will be giving some of the proceeds to a charity of choice, but I’m still finalizing which one that would be. This collaboration wasn’t really about earning for me, but more about an expression of my creativity as a designer [because people don’t really know me for design, though I do love design].

KARE Founder, Peter Schönhofen, on the Importance of Staying Young-at-Heart

Peter Schönhofen seems a jolly man; he has a warm smile that constantly tugs at the edges of his lips. At the grand opening of the latest KARE showroom at Garden Towers in Makati, Peter makes a nondescript appearance, dressed in a modest white polo and a grey coat.

A co-founder of the whimsical German design house, KARE, Peter had flown into Manila for the store’s latest opening. And while his clothes may seem solemn, his outlook, his ethos, and his designs betray a much more colorful outlook on life.

“Thinking outside of the box requires one to stay young-at-heart,” Peter revealed. “You must remain a child all your life.”

And indeed, a quick look at the showroom sees plenty of sophisticated yet imaginative whimsy. There are lamps in the shape of bunny rabbits and side tables with flowers growing beneath their glass. Cockatoo cookie jars and French bulldog sculptures are displayed atop contemporary dining tables with golden geometric legs.

“We do the unexpected, the out of bounds, and we think outside of the box,” Peter explained.

Founded in 1981, KARE’s origin story finds resonance in “thinking outside the box.” Back then, Peter explained, there was very little choice for the consumer.

“Furniture was either well-designed and very expensive, or poorly designed – boring, in other words. There was little in between those extremes,” the founder shared. That’s when he began offering outside those niches. Today, they continue to imbibe a youthful and dynamic ambiance to homes all over the world, well-designed but also reasonably priced.

For Peter, keeping up with the business and staying creative means infusing the company with plenty of young blood, and therefore, new ideas. While KARE has over 40 years of experience in the industry, Peter is constantly ensuring that they don’t get left behind. “We love to hire young people in the company; we educate them on the industry. My daughters also work for me [at KARE] and they constantly remind me that there are new ways to reach similar results.” After all, as Peter attested, change is the only constant.

This paradox has even led him to his most treasured interior design tip: which is to change things up once in a while.

“An empty wall is just an empty wall,” he stated. “Think about what you can do with it – maybe add some lighting, a picture frame, or art.”

Of course, Peter added that sustainability– the obvious trend for a new generation of homeowners – dictates a need for longevity.

“People now want their furniture to last ten, fifteen years,” the CEO acknowledged. “And we do that. Trends come and go; right now, natural materials are in vogue. Certain colors are popular, but at the end of the day, people want things that are well-designed and long-lasting.”

Remember when Makati City was just a vast grassland before the Ayalas transformed it into one of the country’s premier business districts? Or Bonifacio Global City (BGC), when it was simply an old military base? Batangas City is home to the country’s second-largest international port and is one of the top 25 “Digital Cities 2025” identified by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP). Batangas City is also home to over 100 multinational companies (Shell Corporation, JG Summit Petrochemicals, Siemens, San Miguel Corporation, FirstGen) and in terms of manpower, they produce over 6,000 graduates annually.

Luxury Italian Furniture Comes Alive at Moda Interni in Quezon City

Stepping into Moda Interni is like coming home to good friends, at least to those whom you consider true bon vivants. The Italian furniture importer boasts an incredible yet comfortable showroom. Ronald Ventura paintings adorn crisp cream walls while a full marble table sits proudly at the center of the dining room.

Its walk-in closet is furnished with Louis Vuitton suits and a gorgeous, geometric Turri vanity table. A fully functional refrigerator – replete with wines and drinks – invites guests and gourmands to slow down for a tipple or two. “We want people to come in and touch everything, experience what it’s like to live with this furniture,” said Moda Interni CEO Goldwin Sison.

Needless to say, Moda Interni’s figurehead is something of a hedonist. A man with a passion for the finer things in life – cigars, art, and good food – it comes as no surprise that Goldwin now dedicates his business to bringing Filipinos furniture that is just as resplendent. "Good furniture is an investment in your lifestyle, not just an aesthetic choice,” he asserted. “It should be timeless, comfortable, and built to last, offering both function and emotional value."

At the moment, Moda Interni carries four different Italian luxury brands: Pedini, Turri, Lago, and Opera Contemporary. For himself, Goldwin is an avid fan and follower of Pedini. Founded in 1957, the brand is known for its curved kitchen designs, a rarity and a great feat. “It’s incredibly difficult to get the angles right when designing a curved kitchen,” Goldwin shared. “Nobody else in the [local] market offers it as of right now.”

It’s obvious then that Goldwin has centered his choice of furniture – and his business partners – around the ideas of innovation and good research. He partners with brands that have durable yet future-forward ideas, those that know how to keep one leg in modernity, and another in timelessness.

“When people come to us, they often buy furniture with ‘legacy’ in mind. They want to pass these pieces down to their children, their grandchildren,” Goldwin observed.

For its furniture, Moda Interni offers both superb aftersales services and customization. “Fabric and leather are huge trends in furniture today,” Goldwin shared. “For these, we have sheepskin and calfskin options. But honestly, if you told us you wanted furniture with Loro Piana fabric, we can do that too, it’s entirely possible.”

Working in luxury, after all, has taught Goldwin that experience is part of the price. And as an entrepreneur in one of the few economies with a stable luxury market, Goldwin has come to realize that Filipinos are here not just for aesthetics, but for functionality and legacy too.

A look at the Moda Interni portfolio reveals a curated line of brands, all of which have an interesting backstory. Turri, a contemporary favorite, is set to celebrate its centennial year in 2025. They constantly collaborate with esteemed designers such as Monica Armani, Paola Navone, and Matteo Nunziati to create seasonal pieces that last the test of time. Opera Contemporary, a classic-modern furniture company, is run under the esteemed Angelo Capellini brand, which is famous for its woodworking history that dates back to European royalty in 1886. Moda Interni’s most recent addition, Lago, was established in 1976 and specializes in a privately developed material called “X-glass” that creates the illusion of floating furniture.

Ultimately each piece in the Moda Interni showroom is one that’s bound to be loved. “We’re all about creating a space where people can find the perfect pieces to elevate their living experience,” Goldwin said. “We don’t mean for it to only complement lifestyles aesthetically, but also functionally.”
