Singapore Food Festival 2021 Whips Up Hybrid Format, Opens to Global Audiences for 1st Time
Some countries tell their history through the arts, others through traditions. For Singapore, a former fishing village whose history is as deep as its cuisine, nothing reflects its deep heritage better than food. Ironically, there is no authentic Singaporean cuisine. What we now know as the cosmopolitan city’s signature dishes are a combination of different influences: Chinese, Malay, Peranakan, Indian, and Eurasian—all with a sprinkle of Western cuisine. This reflects the city’s multifaceted kitchen traditions that have earned a status as one of the world’s best.
To celebrate Singapore’s culinary expertise, the city’s popular food festival is back with a bevy of masterclasses, tours, and workshops. Unlike last year when the event was entirely held online, Singapore Festival 2021 is adopting a hybrid set-up, combining virtual food tours and physical workshops. And for the first time, the festival is allowing global audiences to indulge in Singapore’s gastronomic feasts through live masterclasses and virtual tours.
Live Masterclasses
One of the most-awaited events is the line-up of live masterclasses by the world’s most esteemed chefs. To be held from Aug. 27 to Sept. 12, 2021, the line-up consists of nine free-to-view and nine paid cook-along sessions. From baking old-school egg tarts to making tender raviole from scratch, these masterclasses will surely get you revved up in the kitchen.
The paid cook-along sessions start at S$12. Some sessions offer custom ingredient and food bundles that foodies from Bangkok, Chengdu, Manila, and Singapore can order.
A must-see is the cook-along with award-winning chef Jeremy Gillon from Michelin-starred restaurant JAG. To be held on Aug. 29, his masterclass will show you how to whip up tender raviole using locally grown kale and spinach, as well as seasonal French herbs.
If you are into everyday staples with a twist, the duo masterclass of MasterChef Singapore judge Bjorn Shen and Filipino chef JP Anglo is right up your alley. Also on Aug. 29, their cook-along will feature a Singapore classic—oyster omelette! The paid session costs S$24 and comes with a food kit to be delivered to you two days before the session.
Mystery Menus
Want to add an element of surprise to your gastronomic feast? Klook’s Secret Suppers got your back. This event offers an interesting take on local flavours through curated set courses, platters, and secret off-the-menu items. To avail of this package, choose among 20 secret restaurant packages from Klook’s website or app, including your desired date and time. The best part is that the exact name of the restaurant remains hidden until about two days prior to the event date. Exciting, isn’t it?
Singapore Festival 2021 is organised by the Singapore Tourism Board and Mojito Ventures in partnership with a slew of brands such as Plaza Singapura, Atome, and KitchenAid, to name a few.
