Level Up Your OOTD: Here's How You Can Pull Off the Denim on Denim Look

Heres How You Can Pull Off the Denim on Denim Look

Ah, denim on denim. Like it or not, it’s a fashion style we’ll keep seeing on our social media feeds, thanks to celebrities and influencers. They do look good wearing them in their outfit of the day (OOTD) photos, so you’re probably thinking, “Why not?” and want to copy them. We’re not stopping you, but be warned that it’s harder to pull off than you think. One mismatch, and you’re off handing yourselves to the fashion police for being a walking disaster. So, how can you pull it off well? Here are some tips you can follow.

Do Wear Different Shades

For starters, don’t wear the same shade from head to toe. Denim isn’t just one shade (or wash) of blue. In fact, you can also find it in white, black, and vibrant colours such as yellow, orange, and pink. It’s a matter of mixing and matching and doing away with the shades we’re used to.

If you really want to wear the same shade, make sure you have another piece of clothing (like an inner top) with a solid colour to complement both your top and bottom.

Don’t Overkill

It’s called a denim on denim look, not a denim on denim on denim look, unless that’s what you’re truly after. If you’re already wearing denim for your top and bottom, that’s it. Stop right there and don’t add anymore. It’s going to be overkill. Save those shoes, bags, and hats for another OOTD you can wear tomorrow or the next time you’re going out.

Do Welcome Details

Denims today don’t only come with the usual buttons and pockets. Some have ripped parts that show a bit of skin to give off a different vibe, while others highlight creativity with colourful patches, embroidery, and painted surfaces. For added contrast, welcome details to wash off the single colour look in your OOTD.

Don’t Forget Your Accessories

As mentioned, a denim on denim look doesn’t necessarily mean that your accessories should be denim. Depending on the vibe you’re trying to achieve, you can make your OOTD casual yet chic. Use a fancy belt to create an obvious divide between your top and bottom, wear a headband or cap that’s the same colour as your inner (for denim jackets), or pair the colour of your bracelets and earrings with your bag.

Do Take Note of the Fit

Whatever cut, wash, or shade you choose, make sure that the denim you’ll wear will flatter your body. Dark denim bottoms, for example, can make you look slimmer, while a looser fit with a high waist can help hide your thunder thighs. Moreover, while wearing oversized clothing is popular these days, ask yourself first if it will make you look like you’re drowning in fabric or not!
