Discover the traditions connecting Cheung Chau’s fishing communities, deities, and the sea at Dragons of Cheung Chau – Heritage, Conservation, and Legacy of Dragon Boats, taking place on Nov. 7, 2026, from 11 AM to 1 PM. Presented as part of the Inter-Island Festival, this hands-on cultural experience offers a rare opportunity to explore the craftsmanship and customs behind the island’s dragon boat heritage.

Every fifth day of the fifth lunar month, Cheung Chau’s seafaring communities send dragon boats out to ferry sea deities, burn offerings, and pray for safety on the water. Central to this tradition are three vessels, the Hap Yi, Fook Yuen, and Sin Hing Dragons. During the session, master boat restorer Ng Kar Man will introduce the annual procession and share insights into the craft and conservation of these important boats.

Participants can then put that knowledge into action through an on-land paddling experience and a paddle-painting workshop. Each completed paddle will become part of a larger public artwork, turning individual creativity into a collective celebration of Cheung Chau’s living heritage. General admission is priced at HK$100.
