Typhoon Essentials: What Should You Put Inside Your Emergency Bag?

Typhoon Essentials What Should You Put Inside Your Emergency Bag

The Philippines is subjected to an average of 20 typhoons annually, no thanks to its geographical location. Being near the Pacific Ocean and the equator where the ocean is warm, typhoons form as water evaporates. It’s an endless cycle. What we can do on our end is to be ready when they come.

In a TIME article, the Philippines is described as “the most exposed country in the world to tropical storms.” While some of us can just stay at home and wait for the typhoon to pass, there could be instances when we need to evacuate immediately to a safer place. When that time comes, it’s best to have an emergency bag ready so we can simply pick it up and go. Don’t know what to pack? Below are some essentials you can consider.

1. Portable Radio

In case a typhoon is strong enough to affect cell towers and electricity supply in your area, it’s a good measure to keep a portable radio so you’re still updated of any warnings issued by your local officials.

The Beat Asia recommends: This portable radio that can be used and charged using solar power, an 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery, a DC 5V Charger (USB), or two D batteries. It also has an energy-saving SMD LED bead flashlight!

2. Food and Water Supply

You’ll never know until when you’ll be stuck at home or in an evacuation center during and after a typhoon so it’s best to have enough supply of clean water. Store at least three days-worth of water in your bag, and don’t forget extra containers just in case you find a good water source!

The Beat Asia recommends: This collapsible water bag container that can carry up to 15 liters. It comes in a folding organ style, so it doesn’t take up space when not in use. It also comes in a faucet switch design to make sure there are less spills as possible.

As for food, it’s best to keep ready-to-eat canned food with easy-open lids so you don’t have to bring an opener. Take note of their expiry dates too, so you won’t end up with spoiled food.

3. First-Aid Kit

Typhoons bring strong winds so it’s possible for debris to be flying around. It won’t hurt (pun intended) if you have a first-aid kit ready to treat small wounds. A first-aid kit also helps prevent infection, which could worsen wounds and make you sick, until medics arrive. Don’t forget to pack medicines as well.

The Beat Asia recommends: This first-aid kit by Betadine, which comes with alcohol pads, plaster strips, cotton balls, wound solution, skin cleanser, dry powder spray, one-half-inch micropore tape, gauze bandage, and a pair of scissors.

4. Toiletries

Pack your emergency toiletries as if you’re traveling. Make them compact, but enough to last you for days. Some of the toiletries you should include are tissue, wet wipes, sanitary napkins, toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap. You might also want to bring disposable underwear just in case.

The Beat Asia recommends: This toiletry bag with clear pouches so it’s easy to find where your items are.

5. Whistle

In a worst-case scenario where you’ll need a rescue, a whistle will be your lifesaver. It can produce around 90 to 120 decibels, which is enough to reach distances despite ambient noises like pouring rain.

The Beat Asia recommends: This dual pipe emergency survival whistle. It comes with a keychain so you can simply attach it to your bag, or to your clothes like the belt loop of your pants.

6. Multi-purpose Waterproof Case

One thing you must safeguard the most during a typhoon is your gadgets, particularly your phone. It will be your main point of communication with your loved ones and the authorities.

The Beat Asia recommends: This waterproof pouch case for your phone to keep it safe from water damage. You might also want to get another one to store your cash, cards, and note of close contacts and emergency numbers. Getting this waterproof pouch for your power bank and chargers is also a good idea. It comes in a water-resistant design and a solid thick EVA material for better shock protection.
