Since their debut in 2021, BINIhas made a mark in the P-Pop scene, achieving milestones and capturing the hearts of millions of fans. Cherry on Top

After the success of their EP Talaarawan, which featured hits like "Pantropiko" and "Salamin, Salamin," BINI continued to generate excitement with the announcement of their new single, "Cherry on Top." P-Pop Kings SB19 Return Home with ‘Wakas at Simula’ Finale Concert

After a successful world tour spanning 21 cities, SB19 is ready to close the curtain on their “Simula at Wakas” era.

The P-Pop Kings rang in the New Year with a big reveal, announcing their “Wakas at Simula: The Trilogy Concert Finale” on social media. The post came with a haunting caption: “Daming sakuna, ’di ko ininda, andito na tayo sa wakas,” and confirmed their homecoming concert on Apr. 18 at the SMDC Festival Grounds. Ticket sale details are still under wraps.

The group kicked off their “Simula at Wakas” world tour last May with a two-day concert at the Philippine Arena. It wrapped up last month, with four shows across Australia and New Zealand. The tour was a massive success, with tickets selling out almost instantly, and earned top honors at both the Filipino Music Awards and P-Pop Music Awards, where it was named Concert of the Year and Tour of the Year.

Composed of Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin, SB19 is a Filipino pop boy band formed in 2018. “Simula at Wakas” is the final EP in a trilogy, which tells the narrative of a hero’s journey. It began with “Pagsibol” in 2021, which spawned hits like “What?,” “MAPA,” and “Bazinga.” In 2023, they released “PAGTATAG!” which solidified their global status with their viral single, “Gento.” Additionally, they also became independent when they formed their own label, 1Z Entertainment, that same year. “Simula at Wakas” was released in 2025 with seven tracks, including the chart-topper “DAM.”

After a two-year hiatus, ALT Philippines is back for its fourth edition—its biggest one yet.

From February 12 to 15, 2025, the contemporary art fair will take over the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City, featuring expanded exhibitions from the nine galleries that are part of ALT Collective: Artinformal, Blanc, The Drawing Room, Galleria Duemila, Finale Art File, MO_Space, Underground, Vinyl on Vinyl, and West Gallery.

While ALT Philippines may just be like any other contemporary art fair in the country, what sets it apart from the rest is its commitment to going beyond traditional art forms such as painting and sculpture. Known as Ayala Malls’ premium large-format cinema, A-Giant theaters are designed to make movie watching feel larger than life. With a massive screen four times larger than the standard, enhanced projection clarity, and Dolby Atmos sound, it really puts you at the center of the story. It’s a good choice if you want the immersive experience without the physical effects of 4DX.

A-Giant screens are currently available at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Ayala Malls Veris North, and TriNoma. The former theaters have over 400 seats, while the cinema in TriNoma, which just launched last June, can accommodate up to 600 moviegoers with plush seating and ample legroom. A-Luxe

If you want a movie experience that will make you feel like a VIP, then go for Ayala Malls’ A-Luxe cinemas, which combine comfort and the thrill of movie magic.

From the name itself, A-Luxe Cinemas focus on luxury seating through modernized recliner seats with wider spacing and special tech amenities like built-in USB charging ports.

A notable A-luxe theater is the newly reopened cinema in Glorietta, which is a boutique theater with 60 motorized recliner seats. Each seat has a generous legroom space, a personal tablet, and a USB charging port. Apart from the comfortable seating, the theater also makes use of laser projection for clearer pictures and a surround Dolby Atmos sound.

Heads up, art toy collectors! POP MART has officially found a permanent home in Manila.

Over the past year, POP MART has been steadily making its presence felt in Manila through a series of highly anticipated pop-up stores and exhibits. From its pop-up launches at SM Mall of Asia and SM Makati, to the POP MART Hello Moon Exhibit & Pop-up featuring Space Molly at SM Aura, and most recently, the coffee-themed pop-up at SM North EDSA, each activation has drawn eager collectors and curious newcomers alike.

These mini stores not only showcased POP MART’s beloved characters and designer toys, but also built excitement for what fans had long been waiting for: the brand’s first-ever permanent retail store in the Philippines, now officially open at SM Megamall!

Ahead of its official opening on Dec. 19, The Beat Asia got a sneak peek at POP MART’s first permanent store during its ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was attended by POP MART executives, SM Malls president Steven Tan, and actress — and avid POP MART collector — Marian Rivera.

Beyond the buzz of the event, we were able to explore the space and check out its carefully curated displays. From fan-favorite characters to exclusive collections, here are the must-see figures to look out for inside POP MART’s newest Manila destination.

From Hirono to Labubu: Most Exciting Finds

The new POP MART retail store spans two adjoining spaces on the second level of SM Megamall Building A. For a more precise landmark, it’s located right next to the newly opened Christy Ng store. That said, you likely won’t have any trouble spotting it — the space is brightly lit, almost like a shining beacon on the second floor, effortlessly drawing in passersby.

At the front of the store are two cool installations on opposite sides. On the left, you’ll find a massive Hirono statue of one of the figures included in the Echo series, called “Knight,” and on the right is an installation featuring a fun spiral garden with spiral light fixtures and windows where you can see The Monsters’ silhouettes. These designs make for great photo spots to commemorate your visit.

Stepping inside, you’re immediately greeted by one of POP MART’s most popular characters, Kasing Lung’s The Monsters, led by the adorable Labubu. At the center of the display are the MEGA LABUBU 1,000% Winter Holiday (P42,500), THE MONSTERS - ANGEL IN CLOUDS Vinyl Face Doll (P11,000), and THE MONSTERS - I FOUND YOU Vinyl Face Doll (P8,300).

Labubu collectors will also be glad to know that they have stocks of the latest and most popular series collections, such as THE MONSTERS Pin for Love Series (P700 single box; P9,800 whole set) and THE MONSTERS Big Into Energy Series (P900 single box; P5,400 whole set). Standalone vinyl plush keychains like the Sitting Pumpkin, FALL IN WIND, Let’s Checkmate, LABUBU × PRONOUNCE - WINGS OF FORTUNE, and the Coca Cola series are also available at P1,400 each.

Also featured in the store is Hirono, a mischievous boy known for his artistic series such as The Le Petit Prince (P600 single box; P7,200 whole set), Shelter (P600 single box; P7,200 whole set), Reshape (P600 single box; P5,400 whole set), and Monster Carnival (P600 single box; P5,400 whole set).

Hirono’s latest series “Road Journal” is also available at the store, which features a wide range of products, including the mini bag (P900), insulated tumbler (P1,700), phone case (P1,400), phone lanyard (P900), passport bag (P900), and fridge magnet (P550). We were looking forward to seeing Hirono’s first-ever plush doll pendant blind box from the same series, but it was absent from the display. It’s currently available online and may be found in-store soon.

Hirono's artist, Llang, also held a signing event on Dec. 21. The artist created a Philippine-exclusive artwork where Hirono is dressed as a Sorbetes (dirty ice cream) vendor. You can snag exclusive gifts with the design at the event.

Other characters include Molly, whose collection and series spans tiny figurines and plush pendants to brand collaborations and MEGA figures. Some notable collections available at the store include MOLLY ZOOTOPIA 2 action figure (P2,500), MOLLY x Zootopia co-branded series figures (P600 single box; P7,200 whole set), and the Pocket Friends series (P700 single box; P4,200 whole set).

Rising Acts from Manila and Singapore to Share the Stage at Bistro Rising

Bistro Rising 2025 makes its much-awaited return to Manila with a renewed focus on cross-border collaboration, highlighting a new wave of Filipino indieartists from Singapore and the Philippines.

This one-night showcase is set to take place on Dec. 29, 2025, at the 70s Bistro in Quezon City.

Co-headlining the show are three Singapore -based Filipino bands making waves in the city-state’s underground music scene: iLaya, a soul-pop act with a smooth, emotive edge; Nostress, known for their reflective indie rock sound; and The Next Wave, an ‘80s new wave-inspired band. Joining them on-stage are Shumi, a Bulacan-based city pop band, and Rooftop Reveries, an indie pop-rock act celebrated for their compelling songwriting and polished live performances.

Presented by Mushi Entertainment, Bistro Rising 2025 is part of a wider effort to strengthen creative ties between the Philippines and Singapore, both connected by an increasingly visible community of Filipino musicians and talents.

“This event is a testament to the vibrant and growing indie music community in both Singapore and the Philippines, creating opportunities for creative collaboration and talent showcase,” shared Requiem Rising Singapore General Manager and Founder Monx Moncayo.

This long-running horror anthology is getting a new installment with a new ensemble of cast and a plot that unfolds across three timelines set in 1775, 2025, and 2050. Each period will explore themes of fear, sacrifice, and survival against varying types of evil forces that have haunted us across generations.

Since entering the country in 1992, the new SM Mall of Asia flagship store brings GUESS’ most advanced store design to date. The Kingdom of Far Far Away arrives in all its fairytale dazzle and signature humor as “Shrek the Musical” lights up the Newport Performing Arts theater stage at Newport World Resorts (NWR) Manila.

Based on the 1990 picture book by William Steig and the blockbuster film franchise from DreamWorks Animation, “Shrek the Musical” brings the beloved ogre back to the stage with all the charm, chaos, and heart fans adore. With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, the 2008 Broadway-original production has made its way to Manila through Musical Theatre International (MTI), delivering a larger-than-life theatrical experience for audiences of all ages. Under the direction of Dexter M. Santos, this local staging captures the spirit of the original while carving out its own delightful identity.

From its vibrant ensemble to its extravagant set pieces, this production of “Shrek the Musical” proves that familiar stories can still feel fresh when told with imagination, humor, and heart. The Beat Manila got to see this whimsical retelling, and here’s what we thought.

A Musical To Tickle Your Funny Bone

Shrek once said the ogres are like onions because they have layers. This musical is exactly that, layered with heartfelt storytelling, humorous lyricism, and stunning costumes and set designs, all tied together to form bombastic song and dance numbers performed by an incredible cast.

The show opened with a Once Upon a Time storybook and, unlike the film that launches straight into the heart of the action, we’re given a touching origin story. We meet a young Shrek being sent off by his parents on his seventh birthday, a rite of passage for ogres. It’s a small but meaningful shift that immediately adds emotional depth, showing us how he grew into the guarded, solitary ogre we know.

We also glimpse a seven-year-old Fiona, who’s similarly sent away to her tower where she waits for over than twenty years for true love’s rescue. Seeing both characters as children creates a parallel that the movie only hints at — two kids pushed into isolation long before their lives intertwine. Shrek’s “Big Bright Beautiful World” and Fiona’s “I Know It’s Today” serve as early emotional anchors, offering a fuller picture of their inner worlds before destiny pushes them together. Their romance feels less like a coincidence and more like fate quietly setting the stage. And when they finally meet, this shared history becomes another layer of connection.

Beyond their matching quirks and sense of humor, the musical highlights how both carry the ache of childhood loneliness. Their duet, “I Think I Got You Beat,” doesn’t just deliver laughs. It underscores a shared wound that makes their understanding of each other feel even more profound.

Krystal Kane’s performance was every bit magical with her clear princess tone and charming portrayal of the princess, while Jamie Wilson gave Shrek a rock n’ roll-like tone, which matched most of the songs, but there were moments when we felt like he was holding back on those high notes.

Of course, Shrek wouldn’t be Shrek without its unforgettable supporting cast, who, in this production, often felt like headliners themselves. One standout was Topper Fabregas as Donkey, who brilliantly brought Eddie Murphy’s iconic character to life. His vocal resemblance was uncanny; the intonations, comedic timing, and playful energy were all so spot-on that it felt like watching the animated Donkey leap straight onto the stage.

Alfredo Reyes’ Lord Farquaad was another show-stealer. It’s easily one of the most physically demanding roles in musical theatre, requiring the actor to sing, dance, and stay fully in character while performing on his knees to match Farquaad’s famously tiny stature. Yet the actor made it look effortless. His Farquaad was outrageous, charismatic, and undeniably hilarious. Despite being the story’s villain, Lord Farquaad quickly became a crowd favorite. The audience erupted during the uproarious “What’s Up, Duloc?” number, capped with a gleefully unexpected moment where he mimics Elphaba’s iconic “Wicked” battle cry. It was a cheeky twist that had the whole theater cheering.

The Dragon played by Julia Serad was also iconic — not only for the massive Dragon puppet that took up more than half the stage, but because of the voice behind it, which gave us chills with those jaw-dropping high notes. Of course, the Dragon would be a diva!

Lastly, the ensemble — a powerhouse group of 30+ singers and dancers — deserves its own standing ovation. They played everything from fairytale creatures to backup dancers, shifting roles with such energy that the stage never once felt empty. “Shrek the Musical” definitely boasts a larger cast than most productions, but believe us when we say: every single performer contributed something vital to the show’s charm and momentum. Together, they created the world that makes Shrek what it is: playful, vibrant, and delightfully chaotic.

Beyond the stellar musical numbers, impressive vocals, and crisp choreography, the stage and costume design fully transported us into this fairytale kingdom. Scene transitions were so seamless that we’d sometimes blink and suddenly find ourselves in an entirely new setting. Each backdrop felt intentional and visually distinct, keeping the experience fresh and immersive.

One highlight was Fiona’s tower, complete with a moving bridge over molten lava. Watching the bridge shift and connect as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey escaped the Dragon felt cinematic — beautifully staged and surprisingly suspenseful. Even the forest scenes felt alive, with trees subtly repositioning and swaying as the actors moved across the stage.

We also loved the nods to the animated film, from the bird exploding as Fiona hit that famously high note to the sharp, funny exchanges between Shrek and Donkey about Lord Farquaad — little Easter eggs that delighted long-time fans.

The costumes paid homage to the original designs but added a theatrical polish that made them feel fresh. The ensemble especially shone in numbers like Fiona’s “Morning Person,” and the Three Blind Mice sparkled (literally) in their sequined silver dresses during “Make a Move.”

Shrek’s full look was another triumph — his green suit blended so naturally that it never read as a mask or costume but as part of the actor himself. This production clearly went all-out on the visual elements — perhaps to make up for the familiarity of the story — but whatever the reason, it worked. It was a feast for the eyes, and we were genuinely impressed by just how much artistry and effort went into every detail.

Final Verdict

Vibrant, fun, and extravagantly staged, “Shrek the Musical” is one holiday show you simply shouldn’t miss. Fans of the beloved film franchise will feel right at home with its chaotic song-and-dance numbers, sharp humor, and heartfelt storytelling. But this production also offers something deeper. Beyond the love story, it celebrates the beauty of embracing what makes you different.

The ensemble’s performance of “Freak Flag” is a standout moment. It's a triumphant anthem of individuality and self-acceptance that added an emotional layer to the story, one that was not directly explored in the film. It’s a reminder that the quirks, oddities, and “freaky” parts of ourselves are worth celebrating.

So, to all you “All Stars,” gather your friends and family and head to the Newport Performing Arts Theater. Spend a few hours laughing, smiling, and joining Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the rest of Far Far Away for a feel-good musical adventure that’s perfect for the season.
