Robert Downey Jr. is 'Doctor Doom' and Other Explosive Reveals at SDCC 2024

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) was full of explosive surprises and major announcements, making this year’s convention a total banger! The annual multi-genre entertainment event happened for a full five days from Thursday (July 24) to the weekend, and was jam-packed with star-studded panels, exciting movie news and premiers, awesome drone shows, and massive celebrities. And that was all just from Marvel!
The studio behind the “Avengers” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was unquestionably the biggest winner at this year’s Comic Con. Still glowing from the successful premiere of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” the studio went all out with an impressive drone show and exciting movie news — including an unexpected casting in one of the future Avenger films.

Robert Downey Jr. makes a MARVELous comeback
The famed superhero studio dropped a bunch of high-profile announcements that made us geek out over the weekend, but one reveal stood out among the rest.
Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr., also known to have played the iconic role of Iron Man, was unmasked as Victor Von Doom (Doctor Doom), confirming his return to the MCU. The studio announced that RDJ will play the villain in at least one of the upcoming “Avengers” movies.
The Russo Brothers — Anthony and Joseph Russo — were also announced to direct two upcoming Avengers films: “Avengers: Doomsday” which is slated for a 2025 release, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” which is scheduled for 2027.
Other exciting film news and celebrity appearances from Marvel included:
- Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman appeared for a panel on Thursday the night before the premiere of “Deadpool and Wolverine.” Marvel set up a special drone show followed by a film screening.
- Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson, Danny Ramirez, and Anthony Mackie appeared on stage to tease the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World” film.
- Marvel brought out Harrison Ford and revealed that he will be part of the “Thunderbolts” film, starring alongside Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and David Harbour. The film is expected to come out in May 2025.
- An exclusive look into “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” starring Pedro Pascual, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach was revealed. It was also reported that filming has already begun, and the movie will hit theatres in July 2025.
Official Trailer 2 for “Transformers One”
Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment kicked off the convention panel last Thursday with exclusive footage of the much-anticipated “Transformers” film. Big celebrities on the panel included Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Luke Skywalker is diving into Bikini Bottom for SpongeBob movie
Mark Hamill was announced to voice the Flying Dutchman in “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” which is set to hit theatres on December 19, 2025.
Fans of the Nickelodeon show also got a first look at upcoming shows in the franchise such as the spinoff movie “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie” which will begin streaming on Netflix on August 2, and the one-hour episode special: “SpongeBob SquarePants: Kreepaway Kamp.”
Star Wars open world game announced
“Star Wars: Outlaws” is set to be released on August 30, which is the first open world ‘Star Wars’ video game. It will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox. You can pre-order now!
The Simpsons 36th season first look
The creators of the iconic show revealed a first look at a new season (the 36th!) coming out this fall and this year’s Halloween special, “Treehouse of Horror.”
It was also announced at the panel that they will be partnering with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (the studio behind “Robot Chicken”) to create a “Venom” parody called “Denim.”
Other movies (and franchises) to look forward to
Several movie trailers and exclusive sneak peeks were also revealed at this year’s SDCC including a new Alien franchise “Alien: Romulus” and “Hellboy: The Crooked Man.”
First look and reveals: Spinoffs and new season premieres
Several of our favorite TV shows have dropped some pretty fantastic news and exclusive footage on upcoming seasons and spinoff series, including:
- Second season of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” in 2025 and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol” premiering September 29 on AMC and AMC Plus.
- The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” new animated spinoff series revealed a first look and is set to premiere August 9 on Paramount Plus. According to ComicBook.com, it’s the next chapter in the “Mutant-verse,” expanding alongside the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed” video game coming out this fall, as well as an untitled movie sequel in 2026.
- “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 2 trailer drops at SDCC and will debut August 29 on Amazon Prime Video.
- A new “Doctor Who” spinoff series was revealed by BBC and Disney. “The War Between the Land and the Sea” begins filming next month. An exclusive look at this year’s Christmas special was also released, featuring “Bridgerton” star, Nicole Coughlan.
- Prime Video’s “The Boys” will have a prequel spinoff and is in its early writing stages. Season 5 of the show is expected to drop sometime in 2026.
- "Abbot Elementary" season four premiers October 9.
- Third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is set for a 2025 release with Cillian O’Sullivan joining the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, the fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” is set to premiere October 24 on Paramount Plus.
- “Futurama” Season 12 is reported to have a star-studded lineup of special guests such as Danny Trejo, Ana Ortiz, Tom Kenny, and Cara Delevingne.
- The “American Dad” animated series is not only getting a new season but also a soundtrack containing all the memorable songs from the show, which will be available on Spotify and Apple Music in time for the 12th season premiere.
- A new season of “Bob’s Burgers” is set to be released on September 29.
- A new trailer for “The Penguin” starring Colin Farrell, just dropped. The show begins streaming on MAX this September 29.
