Six Holiday Songs to Ease You into the Holiday Season
In the words of the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, “IT’S TIME!”
We know it's still November but here are some festive tunes to celebrate the upcoming yuletide season, which is only a few weeks away, can you believe it?!
Although a little “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Last Christmas” always hit the spot, we’re listing down some Christmas songs that deserve to be on your holiday playlists and are the perfect season starters to get you into the holiday mood.
From K-Pop ballads to country bangers by Taylor Swift, here are some holiday-themed songs you can sing and groove to, beyond “All I Want for Christmas is You.”
The First Snow by EXO
If Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is the West’s national Christmas anthem, then in South Korea, it’s this song. K-Pop boy group, EXO, released this holiday pop hit in 2013 as part of their album “Miracles in December” which debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. Just like Mariah’s single, “First Snow” experiences a rise in popularity every holiday season and claims a spot on the charts following the arrival of the first snowfall.
Despite the pop-ballad’s happy sound, the lyrics are quite melancholic as they reminisce about a former lover and the regrets one feels from letting them slip away. The group serenades us with heartfelt lyrics that say, “If we could go back a year, would we be different?” and “Say to me, ‘Merry, merry Christmas. Hello, are you doing well?’”
The song also has a Chinese version and was sung by EXO-M, the group’s Chinese sub-unit. EXO-M has been inactive, however, since the departure of members Kris, Luhan, and Tao in 2016.
Fun Fact: Did you know that in South Korea, there’s a superstition that if you witness the first snowfall with the person you like, true and forever love will blossom between the two of you? If you’re a fan of K-Dramas, you might already know this because of “Goblin.”
A Perfect Christmas by Jose Mari Chan
This may not be Jose Mari Chan’s most famous song, but we believe the “King of Philippine Christmas Carols” shines best in romantic ballads like this one.
From the very first line, the balladeer serenades listeners by singing, “My idea of a perfect Christmas is to spend it with you” against a sweet melody made up of gentle piano chords and soaring violin sounds. It’s mainly a love song against the backdrop of the Christmas season, which makes it all the more romantic! It’s the perfect song to blast on your headphones while walking through brightly lit streets, watching people rushing about trying to get their Christmas shopping done.
Peace, Love & Mistletoe by iNCH
This Christmas tune stirs away from the usual jingly and sometimes melancholy tracks of the holiday season and instead blesses our ears with mellow acoustics and soothing vocals that make you just want to cozy up in your living room with a warm cup of hot cocoa.
The Singaporean singer-songstress composed a holiday tune about celebrating life and appreciating the things we hold dear to us as the year comes to an end. iNCH weaves this beautiful message into her signature folk sound with soft harmonies and whistles, ultimately making it the ideal tune to ease you into the holiday season!
Crystal Snow by BTS
This Japanese track isn’t a Christmas song, but it sounds like one, which explains why a lot of ARMYs (the BTS fandom) include it in their holiday playlists. This dreamy ballad sings about the delicate nature of love and how it’s as fragile as a snowflake. The song was released as part of their eighth Japanese single album in 2017, alongside the Japanese versions of their hit songs “DNA” and “Mic Drop.” It was then included in their full Japanese album, "Face Yourself" the following year.
BTS has done several Christmas covers and performances over the years and even released Christmas remixes of their pop hits like “Dynamite” and “Butter,” but we believe this song deserves more credit for its poignant lyrics, gorgeous harmonies, and captivating melody that makes it the perfect accompaniment for the winter season.
Perfect Christmas by S Club 7
We’re taking you back to the early 2000s with this track by popular British pop group, S Club 7! “Perfect Christmas” is about waiting on someone to come home for the holidays which is something everybody could relate to as ‘tis the season of coming home to your loved ones.
The track is infused with the band’s signature pop sound and vocals, making it difficult not to sway along with the melody or do an emotional self-MV as you stare out the window dramatically, waiting for that special person to come home.
It was released as a promotional single in the United Kingdom in November 2000 as part of the holiday album “Platinum Christmas” which featured artists like NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears.
Special mention: The lead single for the Noth American album, “My Only Wish (This Year)” by Britney Spears is another track you should definitely add to your playlist!
Christmas Must Be Something More by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has written some of the most popular pop hits of the past decade and if there’s anything her “Eras Tour” proves, it’s that her music resonates with people no matter their age or background.
For the die-hard Swifties (who isn’t these days?), you might already know about her Christmas special extended playback from her country days where she covered some holiday classics like “Santa Baby” and “Silent Night.”
Before “Christmas Tree Farm” made the airwaves, Taylor had a song called “Christmas Must Be Something More” which is an upbeat country pop track reminiscent of her country sound from her debut and Fearless albums.
The 2008 self-written track is about remembering that Christmas is not just about receiving gifts; that it’s not a superficial holiday but one that’s holy and special as it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Taylor’s lyrics in this are as meaningful as her beloved love songs, which makes this track a true gem in her discography and deserving of a spot on your playlist.
