Cybersecurity Made Simple: A Guide for Busy Small Business Owners

In partnership with:

Cybersecurity Made Simple

As a small business owner, your days are filled with juggling multiple tasks: managing operations, satisfying customers, and growing your company. This leaves you with little to no time putting cybersecurity on top of your to-do list. But neglecting it could cost you far more than you realize. Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting small businesses, knowing that limited resources and time often leave them vulnerable.

The good news? Securing your business doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. With a few straightforward steps, you can significantly improve your defenses and protect your business from cyber threats. Here’s a simple guide to cybersecurity for busy small business owners, plus a quick readiness quiz to help you get started.

Why Cybersecurity Matters for Small Businesses

If you think cyberattacks only happen to big corporations, think again. Nearly 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses, and many fall victim because they believe they’re too small to be noticed.

The reality is that every business — no matter its size — handles valuable data, from customer payment information to sensitive company records. A single cyberattack can lead to financial losses, downtime, reputational damage, and even legal consequences. The stakes are high, but by taking simple precautions, you can greatly reduce your risk.

Simple Cybersecurity Steps for Busy Small Business Owners

Here are some straightforward ways to strengthen the cybersecurity of your business, even with your packed schedule:

1. Use Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Weak passwords are one of the easiest ways for cybercriminals to gain access to your systems. Make sure all accounts, from e-mail to financial software, use strong and unique passwords.

Use a strong password that combines uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. You should also implement MFA wherever possible to add a second layer of security, such as a text message code or authentication app.

Why it matters: Even if a hacker guesses or steals your password, MFA can stop them from accessing your accounts.

2. Back Up Your Data Regularly

Data loss can happen due to ransomware, hardware failure, or accidental deletion. Regular backups ensure you can recover quickly without paying ransoms or losing critical information. Use automated backup solutions to save time and store backups in a secure, off-site location, such as a cloud service or external drive.

Why it matters: Backups give you peace of mind and minimize downtime in case of an incident.

3. Train Your Team to Spot Threats

Your employees are your first line of defense. Unfortunately, they’re also one of the most common entry points for cyberattacks due to phishing scams or accidental mishandling of data. To avoid this, educate your team on recognizing suspicious emails, links, and attachments. Encourage them to report potential threats immediately without fear of blame.

Why it matters: A trained team can stop an attack before it starts.

4. Keep Software and Devices Updated

Outdated software and devices are vulnerable to attacks because they lack the latest security patches. Cybercriminals actively exploit these weaknesses to gain access to systems. It's best to set all your software to update automatically wherever possible. Replace unsupported devices or operating systems, such as Windows 7, which no longer receive security updates.

Why it matters: Staying up-to-date closes vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit.

5. Secure Your Wi-Fi and Networks

An unsecured Wi-Fi network is an open invitation for hackers to access your systems and data. Use a strong password for your Wi-Fi and update it regularly, and enable encryption, such as WPA3, to protect data transmitted over the network. You should also let your employees use a virtual private network (VPN) when they're working remotely.

Why it matters: Secure networks keep outsiders from eavesdropping on sensitive business communications.

6. Create a Cybersecurity Policy

Even a simple policy can help your team follow best practices and avoid costly mistakes. Outline key rules, such as what employees should do if they suspect a phishing email, how they can handle sensitive data securely, and when to update passwords or install patches.

Why it matters: Clear guidelines ensure that everyone in your business is on the same page.

Take the First Step: Assess Your Readiness

Feeling overwhelmed? You don't have to. This is where a cybersecurity readiness quiz comes in. It’s specifically designed for small business owners who need a quick, non-technical way to evaluate their security practices.

In just a few minutes, you can identify areas where your business might be vulnerable, learn which cybersecurity practices you’re doing well, and get actionable recommendations to improve your defenses. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is the first step toward protecting your business after all.

Still not convinced? Let’s bust a few common myths about small business cybersecurity:

  • Myth 1: "I’m too small to be targeted."
  • Fact: Cybercriminals often see small businesses as easier targets with weaker defenses.
  • Myth 2: "Cybersecurity is too expensive."
  • Fact: Many effective measures, like MFA and backups, are low-cost or even free.
  • Myth 3: "I don’t have time for cybersecurity."
  • Fact: With automated tools and a few simple steps, you can secure your business without significant time investment.

Protecting Your Business Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

Cybersecurity might sound complex, but with a little effort, you can make a big impact. Start with the basics: strong passwords, regular backups, team training, and keeping your software up to date. These simple actions can protect your business from the majority of common threats.

Lastly, start by assessing where you stand with a free cybersecurity readiness quiz. It’s fast, easy, and could be the most important thing you can do for your business.

Take the quiz now and start building a stronger, safer business!

Basic Cryptocurrency 101: What are Bitcoin, Solana, and Dogecoin?

In partnership with:

Cryptocurrency 101

Cryptocurrency has become a popular topic in finance, transforming how people approach banking and investing. At its core, cryptocurrency is essentially a form of digital money that uses cryptography to ensure its security, making it hard to fake or alter.

Unlike traditional money, cryptocurrencies are not controlled by governments or banks, which provides users with more privacy, security, and the potential for significant financial gains, making them an attractive option for many.

So how does blockchain technology play a key role in cryptocurrency?

  • Blockchain operates as a distributed ledger, recording all transactions across a network of computers.
  • Transactions are transparent, secure, and unchangeable once added to the ledger.
  • The system enables peer-to-peer transactions without the need for a centralized intermediary, such as a bank or payment service provider.
  • This decentralized approach makes cryptocurrency an appealing alternative to traditional financial systems.

Let’s take a closer look at three popular cryptocurrency companies shaping the future of this dynamic industry.

Bitcoin: The Pioneer of Cryptocurrency

Bitcoin, the first and most well-known cryptocurrency, was created in 2008 by an anonymous figure using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. It introduced the idea of decentralized digital currency, enabling peer-to-peer transactions without requiring intermediaries such as banks. Bitcoin’s blockchain technology ensures secure and transparent transactions, and its fixed supply of 21 million coins creates scarcity, contributing to its value.

Bitcoin is widely considered a store of value, often compared to gold, and has been embraced as a hedge against inflation by many investors.

Its journey has been marked by significant price volatility, but it has grown into a mainstream financial asset with broad adoption. It has spurred the development of thousands of other cryptocurrencies and remains a symbol of the potential of digital finance.

Despite its volatility, Bitcoin continues to dominate the cryptocurrency market, maintaining its position as the most valuable and influential digital asset. As of writing, the value of one Bitcoin (BTC) is over US$95,000.

Solana: Fast, Scalable, and Efficient

Solana, launched in 2020, is a fast and scalable blockchain network designed to overcome the limitations of earlier cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Using its unique Proof of History (PoH) consensus mechanism, Solana can process thousands of transactions per second, making it one of the fastest networks in the crypto space. This allows for low transaction fees and high scalability, attracting developers and users looking for efficiency in decentralized applications (dApps) and decentralized finance (DeFi).

Solana’s network supports smart contracts, NFTs, and other blockchain applications, positioning it as a key player in the next generation of blockchain technology. With growing adoption and a strong developer ecosystem, Solana is quickly becoming a major competitor to Ethereum, offering a faster and more affordable alternative for decentralized applications.

Its focus on scalability and speed makes it a promising platform for the future of fintech and blockchain innovation. As of writing, one Solana (SOL) is worth almost US$200.

Dogecoin: From Meme to Market Value

Originally created in 2013 as a parody, Dogecoin has evolved from a meme-inspired cryptocurrency to one of the most widely recognized and actively traded coins. The Shiba Inu dog from the viral “Doge” meme serves as its logo, and Dogecoin’s lighthearted, fun nature has earned it a loyal and enthusiastic community.

Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no maximum supply, which contributes to its affordability and accessibility, allowing people to engage with crypto without significant financial barriers.

Dogecoin’s popularity was significantly boosted by high-profile endorsements, particularly from Elon Musk, who frequently tweets about the coin. Despite lacking a clear use case compared to other cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin remains a popular option for tipping and small transactions.

Dogecoin has earned its spot in the crypto world through a loyal community and growing recognition, showing that even meme coins can hold genuine value. As of writing, one Dogecoin (DOGE) is around US$0.35 cents.

Ethereum: The Backbone of Smart Contracts

Ethereum, launched in 2015, revolutionized the cryptocurrency landscape by introducing the concept of smart contracts self-executing agreements with terms directly written into code. This innovation has enabled the creation of decentralized applications (dApps) and fostered the explosive growth of decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Ethereum's blockchain operates on a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which enhances energy efficiency and scalability.

As the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, Ethereum is a foundational platform for blockchain innovation and continues to lead the charge in enabling programmable digital transactions. As of writing, one Ethereum (ETH) is worth over US$3,300.

TRON: Optimized for Content Sharing

Founded in 2017 by Justin Sun, TRON is a blockchain platform designed to decentralize content sharing and digital entertainment. Known for its fast transaction speeds and zero fees, TRON enables developers to build smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) efficiently. Its primary goal is to empower creators by allowing them to share content directly with consumers, bypassing traditional intermediaries.

With a focus on reshaping the digital media landscape, TRON continues to gain traction as a hub for decentralized entertainment and innovation. As of writing, one TRON (TRX) is around US$0.25 cents.

Apple Intelligence is Here! What to Expect from Its First Wave of Features

In partnership with:

Apple Intelligence is Here What to Expect from Its First Wave of Features Photo by Website/Apple

Heads up, Apple users! After much anticipation, the tech giant’s artificial intelligence feature, called Apple Intelligence, is finally here!

Apple Intelligence is now officially available through a free software update with the release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The AI features, however, are only available on selected devices: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later, and Mac with M1 and later.

For those who are curious, below are some of the most notable Apple Intelligence features.

Smart Writing Tools

Don’t know what to write in your emails or how to respond better to your besties? Fret not, because the new Apple Intelligence brings with it various writing tools, available across all apps where you write, such as Mail, Notes, Pages, and Messages.

One of the features is Rewrite, which allows users to rewrite texts in different versions and adjust their tone, whether professional or friendly, to suit their needs. There’s also Proofread, which checks your grammar, sentence structure, and word choice and gives you suggestions on how to write your texts better.

If you don’t prefer reading long texts, you can also have them summarized in the form of a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.

More Ways to Manage Your Photos

Apple Intelligence's New Photos App
Photo from Website/Apple

We all know how annoying it is to have the perfect photo taken but ruined by a distracting background, or, as we call it, a photobomber. Apple Intelligence users can now say goodbye to this, as it also brings a Clean Up tool, which allows users to remove a distracting element from a photo and replace it with something that matches the background.

No need to scroll hard when you’re looking for a photo or video, too, because the new Photos app is now equipped with a Natural Language search. This feature lets users look for a photo or video by typing a description of the media they are looking for.

The Photos App also now has a Memories feature, which lets you create a movie or a video reel. This feature will pick out the best photos and videos based on a description you will input, then create a storyline with chapters and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. Less manual editing!

Apple Intelligence Helps You Be More Productive

Stressed over work or study? Apple Intelligence got you! In Mail, for example, there’s a new section called “Priority Messages,” which shows you your most urgent emails, such as same-day lunch invitations or your boarding pass for your upcoming trip. There’s also a Smart Reply feature, which will identify all the questions in an email and suggest quick responses that you can send based on those queries. Talk about convenience!

Not only that, but you can also now record, transcribe, and summarize audio, particularly in a phone call. When a user initiates a recording while on a call, participants will automatically be notified and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence will generate a summary of the call.

A Smarter Siri

Our friendly Apple assistant Siri has become friendlier, too! With richer language-understanding capabilities, Siri can now follow along with your words even when you stutter or stumble and maintain context from one request to the next. Siri can now also answer all your questions about your Apple device, like how to record your screen or how to share your Wi-Fi password, among other things.

It also sports a new look, too! The glowing ball of light is gone and is replaced by an elegant glowing light that wraps the edge of your iPhone, iPad, or CarPlay screen. Siri can also be placed anywhere on Mac devices, so users can access it easily.

All these features are only the first wave of offerings from Apple Intelligence, with plans to roll out more in the coming months.

“Apple Intelligence introduces a new era for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, delivering brand-new experiences and tools that will transform what our users can accomplish,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in an announcement.

A New Era? Here's What You Can Expect from Apple's Upcoming iPhone 16

In partnership with:

What You Can Expect from Apples Upcoming i Phone 16 Photo by Apple Insider Photo by YouTube/Apple Insider

The iPhone reveal month is here! Tech enthusiasts always get ready for September, as tech giant Apple is expected to release the latest iPhone and iPhone Pro models (and the latest Apple Watch too!) during this time.

The buzz is real, with leaks and rumors on what the new iPhone 16 will look like. They're just enough to keep us on the edge of our seats. And while last year’s iPhone 15’s biggest change was the switch from lightning to USB-C port, everyone’s talking about what Apple might surprise us with this time.

To excite us further, the tech company has announced a new Apple event taking place this Sept. 9, with an Apple logo that mimics the design of that little circle that appears when you call Siri and a tagline that says “It’s Glowtime.”

In case you’re wondering what to expect from the upcoming Apple event, we’ve gathered some of the most talked-about leaks and rumors regarding the new Apple iPhone 16 and 16 Pro lineups.

AI: Apple Intelligence

While other smartphone brands like Samsung have made their own moves towards artificial intelligence (AI), Apple seems to be lagging in this aspect. But maybe not anymore – as the company has recently announced the integration of such technology into its upcoming iOS 18 during the WWDC 2024 last June.

Apple’s AI, also called Apple Intelligence, is said to be an upgraded version of generative AI, which is used in text and image generation. This feature is expected to proofread or summarize texts for its users and even write long messages for them.

In terms of image generation, Apple AI can be used to generate custom emojis (also called Genmojis). There’s also an Image Playground experience, which creates an entirely new image using descriptions, concepts, or even a person from the user's Photos gallery, and an Image Wand, which transforms a rough sketch from the Notes app into a related image.

Pretty cool, right? That’s not all, because the new iPhone might also have a Clean Up feature, which can remove unwanted background elements on photos — no more photobombers!

Don’t worry, though, because iOS 18 will also be supported in phones with at least an A12 Bionic chipset (iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and up). However, the AI features will only be available in iPhone 15 Pro models and up.

A Smarter Siri

Siri, Apple’s trusty smart assistant, is also getting an upgrade. According to Apple, the new Siri will become “even more capable, integrated, and personal.” One of the upgrades to look forward to includes a richer language understanding, which will make communicating with Siri easier and more natural.

Siri will also be able to work across apps! For example, users will be able to ask Siri to edit a photo using the Photos app or send someone a text on the Messages app. Siri also ditches the glowing ball of light at the bottom of the screen when it is activated; instead, the edges of the devices will light up to signify when Siri is in use.

New Look: Camera Layout and Colors

In terms of aesthetics, not much has changed in the iPhone's design from iPhone 11 up until 15, aside from the change from the Notch to the Dynamic Island and the switch to titanium material. This year, however, there might be a few distinct changes, one being the camera layout. According to Apple Insider, the cameras of iPhone 16’s base models will be vertically stacked instead of diagonally, which dials back to the design of iPhone 11 base phones.

Apple is also reportedly debuting new colors for its new iPhones. According to a social media post by tech reviewer Sonny Dickson, which shows a photo of iPhone 16 prototypes, the Pro models will drop the Blue Titanium variant and replace it with a metallic bronze-like color. This is in addition to the White Titanium, Black Titanium, and Natural Titanium colors that are already available for the 15 Pro variant.

Meanwhile, the base models are expected to come in five colors: a deep, rich blue shade, a sleek black, a soft pink hue, a clean white, and a vibrant green color.

Capture and Action Buttons

Last year, the Action Button made its appearance in the iPhone 15 Pro phones — a button that can be programmed to a specific function that can be accessed with just one click. This year, the Action button is rumored to be making its way on the base models as well, replacing the Silent toggle at the side of these phones.

Another button that is expected to be on the new iPhones is the Capture Button. It is said to be located at the lower right side of all iPhone 16 phones and will be able to open and control the camera app. This is supposed to make taking selfies and photos easier, no more struggles in looking for the app when you’re in a hurry!

The Bigger, The Better?

One other rumor that’s been going around is that the iPhone Pros will have slightly bigger display sizes. This means the new phones could have thinner bezels or bigger sizes. Recently, MacRumors said that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a display size of 6.3 inches, a 0.2 upgrade from the iPhone 15 Pro’s 6.1 inches.

Similarly, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch screen, a bit bigger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch display. We can also expect a slight change in these phones' weights, with the 16 Pro being 7 grams heavier and the 16 Pro Max being 4 grams heavier than their counterparts.

Meanwhile, no changes in size are expected from the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus phones.

Prices

Given the rising costs, the increasingly competitive smartphone market, and the upgrades done to the iPhone 16 lineup, a price increase may be expected. Several sources say that the iPhone 16, the most basic model, will still have a starting price of US$799, while some say that a US$100 increase is possible.

On the other hand, the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models may have a base price of US$1,099 and US$1,199, respectively, but mainly because Apple is reportedly ditching the 128GB variation.
