MTR Begin Installing New Entry and Exit Gates with Credit Card Payment

The MTR Corporation has begun to install new entry/exit gates on the system, which will allow commuters to pay using credit card and e-payment for entry and exit on the system. Racecourse, Hang Hau, and LOHAS Park are the first MTR stations to have the new gates since Mar. 14.

This initiative is part of the corporation's long-term asset renewal plan for the automatic fare collection (AFC) system. The new gates feature a slimmer design, providing a wider walkway for passengers, and can support more e-payment options, making travel more convenient for passengers and tourists.

The corporation has invested over HK$1.3 billion in the asset renewal of the AFC system. Furthermore, it has formulated a long-term asset renewal plan for the AFC system to provide more e-payment options for passengers and tourists.

The plan includes replacing over 2,400 entry/exit gates in the heavy rail network with new gates, and enhancing the payment functions of Customer Service Centres at MTR stations throughout the network.

"We look forward to seeing MTR ticketing service embarking on a new era with credit card payment added, making passenger journeys more convenient and efficient,” Ms Jeny Yeung, Hong Kong Transport Services Director of MTR Corporation, said.

The corporation aims to introduce contactless credit card ticketing service by the end of 2023 at the earliest.

Passengers will be able to pass through the gates with Octopus, Single Journey Ticket, QR code e-wallets, or contactless credit card payment.
